is it time to replace my clutch

i have a 97 z28 with the 6 speed. my clutch engages at the very top of the pedal. maybe two or three inches before the end of the pedal travel. i dont think my clutch is slipping any. but then again i have never driven a car with a slipping clutch so i have no idea what it feels like anyways. so my question is is this a warning sign saying that i have other problems. or is this my imagination. and can the clutch be adjusted to engage closer to the floor because i saw nothing in my chilton manuel telling me how to do this or am i just kinda stuck this way. thanks for all the help

There isnt anyway to adjust our clutches. I think you might be able to get an adjustable master cylinder from Mcleod that will get your pedal closer to the floor. I think it runs about $250.00.

When your clutch is slipping, that means that the engine RPMs are increasing, but your tires aren't spinning any faster. You will see your tach blip up real quick, like if it was in neutral, or the clutch was in. That's because the clutch is failing to clamp to the flywheel and transmit the torque into the tranny. That's when you'll smell it itoo. You don't need to replace it until that's happening. To adjust the engagement, I'm pretty sure you'd need an adjustable master cylinder. Engaging higher than normal can mean the the disc is wearing thinner, and your days are numbered. But you could have quite a few miles left in her. It all depends on how you drive it.

Has your clutch always engaged all the way at the end?
I ask you that cause mine does the same but it hasn't always been like that. Everything was fine till a day I went to the tack and after that during 4 days I could smell the clutch and since then it engages higher and higher. Somebody told me that it is a sign of a diying clutch.
I know that mine is toasted even if it still grabs pretty well.
I will have it replaced with an SLP one on Monday.
I'll let you know what we found .

yeah let me know what you find man because i really hate not being able to drive my car. even for a day. and how much does it normally cost to change out a clutch. or how difficult is it. if it is not to difficult i might try it out on my own.

Take it from somebody who has been through 3 pressure plates, 5 discs, 2 flywheels, and 2 shift forks.... Your clutch is going. You will be able to drive on it for a while before you start to really feel it slipping, and many times you won't smell it burning, but the fact that the clutch is engaging so high means that it's 95% likely that "its days are numbered" to quote patriot. How many miles are on it, how much power are you pushing, and has it ever been changed before?
You'll also notice that when you really hit the gears, it just doesn't feel the same or hit as hard. Do yourself a favor and start looking for deals now. You're much more likely to find a good deal on a new drivetrain piece in 3 months as apposed to 3 weeks. Also, in my experience, DON'T BUY USED DRIVETRAIN PARTS!!! They are the most heavily abused parts in the car.
Labor on the swap should be around 300-400 depending on who you go through. It's a fairly tedious job to do yourself, and not something I would recommend unless you are pretty experienced and know for a fact that you have the right tools.

well she has about 75,000 thousand miles on her. i dont kniow when the last time the clutch was changed because i am not the orginal owner. the only power adders i have is hypertech and grantelli mass air flow sensor. thanks for the help and does anyone know of anyone who sells a cheap clutch. nothing looking for anything performance minded. got to many other things to do first. like brakes, chassis, suspension, then comes the driveline and engine.

Everyone seems to like SLP stuff. The one I have been happiest with is the Mcleod performance (not street twin). It's relatively inexpensive and holds up well.

I think my clutch is going to. Shes doing the same thing, letting out at the very top. My car has about 85k on the stock clutch. Thats pretty good if you ask me. She also has full bolt ons and 3.73 gears. Im surprised its lasted this long. Its not slipping yet or burning. How much longer if I baby it and keep her from the track do you think she could last? How many more miles?

I finally had my clutch replaced today. It was gone. Way too thin!! That's what made it release so high.
I have an SLP unit in place and even if I can't really get on it right now, it really feels good and release when the pedal is half pushed.
Hope this helps.

Jacques.
