Time for a BIGGER Cam

Well, I am ready for a bigger cam now. I like the HOT CAM but it is time to go bigger. My mods are in the sig.

I don't drive the car everyday, usually only on weekends. Will possibly add a little nitrous to it later.

Make some suggestions please, CC306, 230/236, ???

You could use the search option and see what other people think.

Do lots of research before buying a cam.

Well, I knew the first post would be use the search option. But, I have searched and read for the last few hours. I just couldn't find anything to make up my mind.

I just wanted to see what people thought about my car with my mods, more specifically which cam with the stock LT4 heads and intake. (I plan on changing the valve springs so this won't be an issue)

What is the 847 cam? I've only heard of the hotcam or LT4 cam's by GM. How much horsepower would you estimate that combo makes?

I posted the specs above. I would guess i am somewhere between 350-360 rwhp, but car has never been on a dyno.

And people call me nuts for running a CC306 on stock heads.

You carrying camping gear in the back?

Not to be a pessimist, but I'd guess 345-350 based on Marcins dyno and trap in excellent weather and my dyno and trap in mediocre conditions. Unless you have some reason to believe otherwise.

Another board member has same cam and a4 and rolled 348 with stock heads. I dont see any issues with another 10 hp to the ground with a m6. This is a pointless conversation, i HATE bench racing, lol.. It ran 114 (ok ok 113.86) traps in bad weather (hot/humid), thats a fact, who cares about dyno numbers

p.s. Its not camping equiptment, its crack. shhhhhhh! dont tell the feds

atljar, I am interested in the 847 cam now, how is the bottom end? How is the idle? Who did the tuning on your car? What is the GM part number?

Who has the A4 car on here with that cam? I would like to ask them a few questions.

Anymore suggestions, when I posted this I was thinking about either the CC306 or the 230/236, but now I am wondering about this 847 cam. OK, now please help me make up my mind.

If you're gonna use nitrous you should pick a cam with a bit more LSA like a 114.

I have the 230/236 which is really streetable in a 383 but you could go with a custom grind and get more lift. Say .600 lift?

haha,

Your right, it is pointless since 114 is smokin fast on stock heads. I can't wait to go to maple grove and see what kind of MPH i can sqeeze out there versus beaver springs. Another dyno is a good justification for me, i've never seen that dyno and was just playing devils advocate based on recent dyno's with those hp numbers I've discussed. I agree with your recomendation since he did ask for a BIGGER cam, AND already has LT4 heads.

Warning, I don't think anybody will want to race you with the 847, it sounds too damn mean

With mildly ported heads that flow only 254/188 @ .500 lift (a little better than stock LT4 heads) and the GM 847 cam my car put down 412hp, 371tq at the tire and gone as high as 117.7mph in the 1/4 mile. Although the car lacks a little bottom end under 2000rpm, it has a flat torque curve from 2500-6000rpm. I'd expect you to have in the neighbourhood for 370-380rwhp with this cam and LT4 heads.

Its not bad on the street and lopes like a ****. I have details of my set-up in my sig. In 2001 everyone on here was talking about the CC306, 2002 was the year of the 230/236. Now the GM847 and XE236/242 are the latest craze.

For 847 info, here are some very good threads with all the info you would ever need.

http://web.camaross.com/forums/showt...&highlight=847

AND

http://web.camaross.com/forums/showt...&highlight=847

Finally

http://web.camaross.com/forums/showt...&highlight=847

hope that helps a little. A few of them were started by me on dragstrip runs, but there are dyno graphs, emissions reports, drivability etc thrown in there too.

Also my car is my daily driver, gets 24-25 mpg on the highway with 4.33 gears, lopes so so at idle (1k), and wont stop pulling anywhere in the rpm range. Tuning was done by dave smith (aka lt1dave, and myself).

The guy with the a4 is ellis (1flyin94Z) or something of the likes. He responds in some of those links
