Is it time for a 12 bolt?
Is it time for a 12 bolt?
Well, my 10 bolt is in need of a rebuild after only 48k, on a stock engine. What kind of crap is this? Anyway, since I have to have some serious work done to the rear end, should I just punt now and upgrade to a 12 bolt. The engine is pretty much stock now, but I am considering a "properly built" blower motor that should put me well into the 400 - 500 hp range. Even if I don't go through with the blower, I will still upgrade cam and heads.
I have an M6 and the car is sort of a daily driver. Do I stick with the 3.42 or go to 3.73? Also any recs on the new rear end. I hear alot about Moser, what do you all think. And since I will not be able to do the work myself, any suggestions. I live in Houston, TX.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Stock engine?
Stay with the 10bolt......unless you just have money to throw around.
I'm thinking that the rear failing on you after 48K is a bad luck fluke.
Stock vehicles don't need a 12 bolt.........unless you plan on upgrading your gears to 4.10's - then even a stock end will grenade after XX amount of hard launches....
If you plan on adding a significant amount of power to your car in the future then this may be a good oportunity to upgrade to a 12bolt.
If staying stock with stockisssh gears and money is tight - you will be mostly safe with a new 10bolt.
Good Luck with whatever you decide.

with a M6 you will need a better rear end if you plan on anykinda sticky tires and alot of power. I went with a moser 12 bolt. but the strange 12 bolts are more of a bolt in than the strange unit. And there is always the 9" a little cheaper but I dont like the posi units in them.
>I have the Strange 12 bolt from www.tbyrne.com (who usually has the best deals on them) , and it was a very easy bolt-in .
(If you plan to do any rear suspension than this is a good time to do it
)
If you plan to go heavily modded in the not to distant future then get the upgrade (my oppinion) , but if you are doing cam and heads (top end) only thenget the rear end girdle that replaces the 10 bolts rear cover with an aluminum one that puts pressure on the bearing caps (like the TA performance #TA1809 from TByrne) .
It is cheaper insurance than just installing a stock rear end , and cheaper than a 12 bolt or 9" (that can't use ABS) .
