Re: Ticking at idle

I have the same problem w/ my 93! When w/ the hood down it sounds like its coming from all over the place, but w/ the hood up Its too hard to find out where. After a lot of listening I put a screw driver up to my injectors and sure enough it was them! The tick sounds very familiar when you put a screw driver up to an injector and your ear. When I first heard the tick, I thought it was the timing chain, that what yours sounds sorta like? Like a chain w/ slack in it? Its the injecros which cause you to hear it all over the top end.

EVERYONE CHECK YOUR INJECTORS!

this can also be the reason why 93,94,95 guys only have it since our injectors are mighty old and prolly a different design.

I have an electric cutout on my car and when I head out to our local hangout spot, I open it in the parking lot to try and cover up the crappy sounding tick.

You mentioned you had the lifters replaced, are you sure the shop accually replaced them and not shooting you a curve.
I am not implying, just wondering becouse I have almost reached the point of doing the whole Cam, 1.6 rr, and new lifters to make this noise go away.

Just wondering.
When its the injectors it makes it sounds like its coming from all over the top end.

I changed the injectors on my 94 and the ticking noise never went away.I really think that we are having some sort of oil supply problem to the top end of these engines. When I adjusted the lifters with the engine running I was really suprised at how little oil was coming out of the rocker arms.I think that this is an improtant clue to figuring out what the problem is.

I do have a suggestion. If I don't get to it first the next time someone changes lifters check the lifter bore I.D. and lifter O.D. and see if the bores are worn oversize. In my opinion this would be a prime location to lose oil pressure before it gets to the valvetrain. What are your thoughts on this.

Re: Ticking at idle

my 94 also ticks, i think from the right side, but only when the engine is cold, and it goes away after a minute. real quick.

i just hear it backing out of the driveway but not later.
stock engine internals 84K miles. i better check my headers and plug wires too

Re: Ticking at idle

HEY YOU GUYS, TRY THE FOLLOWING BELOW ... MINE DID THE SAME and stopped after a oil change!!! I had 2 reply but my dad nailed my problem on the money, He said to change the oil filter to a good brand and it fixed my camaro tick 95%, the cheap #$@ pulolater was under pressure when i spinned it off and it still does a little ticking but you gotta freakin zoom in on your heads to hear it close, but try this I use and recommend NAPA Gold (wix) filter and give me a shout if it solves it.

Re: Ticking at idle

If you think its a oil problem then swith over to Castrol GTX startup, the oil is much stickier and polarized so it stick to the metal and your car wont make any tapping on startup. Trust me this stuff works like a charm, I had a mustang w/ a bad main bearing and I put this stuff in and it made all the noised go awa on startup, It prollt works good for the rockers since it will stick to them as well.

Re: Ticking at idle

I've always used NAPA and K&N oil filters. So I dont think that is my problem.

Re: Ticking at idle

Hey guys, I also think you need to put a stethoscope or a screwdriver up to each Injector as GM's are notoriously noisy, they are on my 92 TPI, and my 95 Z28 Convert! Let me know if this is not the case for any of you.

Re: Ticking at idle

I use Val. 10-30 and an AC filter.
Always have since I bought the car with 24K miles.

I am pretty sure it's not an injector becouse as stated earlier, I can hear it on the driver side under the hood and the sound resonates through the gutted cat becouse it sounds louder midway the car on the passenger side.

I am saying it is internal. I thought lifter but in an earlier post I read, that was not the cure for one fellow F-body owner.

Besides, for me, after running Marvil Mystery Oil the pitch of the ticking changed. It just won't stop ticking.

I think I am going to try a bottle of "Seafoam" this weekend. I read in several articles (sometime back) that you could run a whole bottle for 30 mins. at idle and then change the oil and then just put what the bottle recomends to add to the oil between oil changes.

Any input on that "Seafoam" stuff ?
I know people that swear by the Marvil Mystery Oil but I know nothing about Seafoam.

Re: Ticking at idle

guys, i am in the same boat. I have an 00 LS1 and mine ticks at idle, but not at start up. I notice that the oil pressure is 60 psi at startup and 40 at idle. This problem has gotten worse as time has gone on.

This weekend, someone recommended 15W50. Whatever you do, DO NOT TRY THAT. I swear, it made my car sound like a deisel. I quickly chnaged back to 5W30.

I have read some stuff about some German made Castrol 0w30 that has done the trick before. I guess that I am going to try that this weekend.

But, i agree, it is a pain in the *** sound.

anybody else have any suggestions. I am desparate.

Re: Ticking at idle

It's just valvetrain noise. Oil will help. If you have an injectors clicking loud enough to hear it you have bigger problems than that.

I would advise not listening to Jazsun's advice if I was anyone, he's a high school kid that knows it all. Regarding only 93,94,95 guys having it? You're retarded, and the injector design is the same throughout all LT1s, they're the exact same injectors even.
