Thoughts on stock timing chain for LE2

Any thoughts? Any problems? Can an LT4 timing set even work with my 94? Is the LT4 chain or the GM Heavy duty one stronger, and is all this needed?

Honestly, you're going to get different replies. The stocker works for some, and others have broken the lt4. I think the best bet would just be to see what lloyd reccomends. If you want my two cents, i say go for a cloyes. If direct replacement, ie plug and play, is an issue, then go for the lt4. It's stronger than stock; however, that said, it is pricey. G/L

I would go with a Cloyes standard SBC double roller. You will have to go with an electric waterpump though. You will also have to press the cam gear off of the WP drive.

The WP will run you about $200.
The timing set about $80.

Re: Thoughts on stock timing chain for LE2

no, they dont make anymore noise then stock, its the gear drive timing sets that make the noise (whine like a blower....1982 cheesey)

on a 94, you need too swap too a vented opti and vented opti timing cover, use a cam with a dowel pin and an electric waterpump too use the cloyes, otherwise you are pretty much stuck with stock or GM stuff (linkbelt style timing sets)

Damn. I just put a new non-vented opti on. Dont really feel like buying ANOTHER opti, so looks like I'll stick with either stock or the GM HD. Well actually, I'll talk to Loyd and see what he says.

You can't use the HD cause you still need the vented opti.

Any NEW timing chain or low milegae one will work... People break timing chains because they are putting bending loads on the chain because the cam and crank gears are not aligned. This is a sure fire way to break a new timing chain.

I designed the LE cams, so I guess you could call that from the horses mouth.

yup, comp r's , hi-tech push rods, comp pro mag 1.6 rr, bee hive springs...
Hooker long tubes, 38# injectors, no cats, Racetronix fuel pump kit, E.D. timing set( not quite ready for the electric pump, yet) etc... a bit over 7k invested when all is over...
I got a bit anxious on the valve covers as I was assembling the heads. I wanted to keep things clean so I stuck the covers on. The chain was just put on so the valves were in the #6 position and the driver side fit fine, after a bit of minor trimming. I did the same to the passenger side and it still didn't fit. I hacked everything out and still had the same problem. It dawned on me after I trashed the cover that I probably needed to adjust the valves to get the locks down a bit more. Once the valves were adjusted... bingo!! Oh, well, I have done dumber things

Re: Thoughts on stock timing chain for LE2

Looks like you have everything there... watch the Comp R's they have had some issues with some of them lately, nothing major in terms of damage but it can be noisy and cause you to be down on power... I'm glad you have the Pro Mag's and the Hi Tech PR's that's the way to go with any Hyd Roller IMHO.

Yeah, I get either sheetmetal, LT4 or those "billet" ones on Ebay and modify them on the mill to fit... I did that trimming crap a few times now I tell guys, either you fix those stock bastards or I'll get some real covers.

You'll probably have to adjust the valves again once you get that puppy warmed up, but that's not a issue really.

BTW on the cam what did it say on the back of the cam? LE2-383 or did you get one of the LE2.2-383 cams?

I was so pumped to get the cam in, I didn't check the back side. I can email you the specs. If you remember I emailed you with a little address correction I'd be interested to get your take on this cam. I love everyones expression when I tell them my compression and just the lift. They all say no way. Guess we'll just have to show them.

lol....

Yeah it's the LE2-383 cam. It should work like a champ, I love peoples thoughts on the cams "yeah that's not going to work" then it runs and they understand. Can't knock it till ya try it, hell I would have never ate Sushi if I did that, and that would be a shame for me.
