Those who have had opti's fail.....

Did it set a code when it died or before it died? What exactly did it do when it died? What did it do when you tried to crank it? Any prior symptoms?

Re: Those who have had opti's fail.....

My opti didnt throw any codes. The copper contact on the rotor flung off so it couldnt distribute spark anymore. My car went from 4000 rpm to 200 rpm in about 1/2 second and I shut it off immediately.

Mine threw a code dont remimber what code but it said to replace the crank position sensor (did that no help) car went to limp mode about 1/2 power ...took her to the dealer and they said said crank position sensor after I explained and showed them the GM reciept they were confused after three days of trying to figure it out and re-flashing the PCM (loosing the tune in the process) they hooked up the cat to thier network and had techs in Detroit trouble shoot the problem replaced the Opti and problem solved

Kind of felt like a washing machine on spin with too many clothes on one side. Hopefully I never have to go through that again.

I've had two go bad. The first was a low RPM high load stumble, no codes. The second was throwing a persistent DTC 36 High Res Pulse failure.

I probably went through 3 optis in the last 5 years on my ride. Each time there was no SES light so no codes, but in damp or especially wet weather the throttle response lagged out and the car had problems idleing. The best solution is to make sure the two rubber o-rings are on the shaft are right, and that you use plenty of RTV sealant (if you re-assemble)

Mine threw a code -- random cylinder missfire. It started stumbling really bad while idling, and then when I took off it didn't do it as much but then it started again and the SES light came on.

When the OEM died, no codes just seemed to have a bit of a miss for about two weeks then it just died.

No codes, I had no clue it was my opti, till of course I replaced it, and almost everything else in the ignition system.

Re: Those who have had opti's fail.....

The reason I was wondering is that my car died like it ran out of gas with no prior symptoms or codes being thrown. 5 thousand miles ago it threw a low res failure code and had been stumbling for a few seconds till I shut it off and restarted the car and everything was fine. I still have yet to check ALL of the plugs but 1 is working and everything else seems to be working, Ill really be stumped if I pull all my spark plugs and they are lighting up BTW it has 86k on it so.....

Thats exactly how mine died. Try this go to the local parts store and get a spark Tester (about $5). It allows you to set it to a testing gap and it wil more then likley fail.
