Thinking about 383, what do you think?

I have been thinking about doing some internal work on my motor for awhile. She has 105k on the clock, even though she runs GREAT I still want to beef her up abit. Currently for this setup I have the heads and cam. The heads are TEA "stage 3" ported stock lt1 castings w/ port matched intake manifold, here are the flow numbers:

lift intake exhaust

0.100 70.2 56.8
0.200 149.7 115.0
0.300 209.5 164.4
0.400 250.9 201.5
0.500 268.1 227.5
0.550 270.4 239.8
0.600 276.1 246.0

The cam I already have is a Comp Cams 230/236 cam. As for the rotating assembaly I will most likley be going with Combo Motorsports 383 kit which comes with the following:

Eagle 383 cubic inch Rotating Assembly 4.030" Bore SRP -5cc dish pistons, 3.75" stroke Eagle forged crank, Eagle forged 6.00" H-Beam Rods.

I will be running no more then 150 shot of n2o through her. Going to have the block sent out and cleaned. decked, clearaneced, bored, etc... What are your thoughts on all these items? Any approx rwhp/rwtq numbers you wanna throw at me N/A? Also, with a 12 bolt and some slicks, will she be in the 10's. Any comments or suggestions welcomed. Thanks!

im not really a big fan of 383's. i see a lot of heads and cam cars make just as much power without the tuning hassles the 383 guys have. that does sound like a good setup though, should be pretty solid. dont know about the dish pistons though, that is going to lower compression. i would aim for 11.0:1 compression. should make good power on the motor and even better on the juice. is this a M6 or A4 car? what clutch are u planning on running? what converter (if A4)? what gear? this all adds in on the quest for 10's. with the right combo in the drivetrain, i would say 10's are possible on the juice and mid 11s on motor. tuning, in my book, should be your biggest investment.have fun, let us know what u end up doing

sorry, didnt see the sig. clutch looks good. what about gear? i have the 230/236 cam and it NEEDS a decent amount of gear. i am NOT happy with my 3.73 with this cam and M6. i suggest at least a 4.10 gear.

I already have the cam. The guys at TEA said that this cam would work awsome with these heads and a 383 setup. Wonder how much n2o it can hold, and how drivable around town it will be.

I agree but you could go bigger. As fas as what 96LT1 said about tuning issues I know nothing of it. My motor got 3k on it and I had the comp programmed from Bryan at PCMforless. The motor started on a flick of the ignition and hasn't had a problem yet. My biggest problem is loose header bolts.

ok guys I decided to go with a bigger cam since this thing is going to be mainly used at the track. I want a cam that will utilize the nitrous well, BUT also make NICE power N/A. I do not drive it everyday BUT I do want to keep it drivable on the street (IE: I dont want to have to light keep gas taped so she dont stall). Also with this setup N/A I WANT to make 400-450rwhp (maybe somewhere in between). With those flow numbers, and that 383 setup what cam do you guys recomend? THANKS!

EDIT: Also i forgot to add Ion @ Madz28 will be doing my tuning, and I plan to be getting a 12 bolt with eithe 3.73 or 4.10 gears.

Well, since you'd like a bigger cam, like I said earlier. Talk to Joe Overton about your cam choice and he'll help you get to where u want to be.

Nick,

Check out my sig below. I am getting a 383 built also. I decided after I spun a main bearing and needed a rebuild, that I'd get it done bigger and better. I am getting my heads done by Lloyd Elliot, and then he is having Joe Overton make me a custom grind cam to go with the setup I have. The cam is going to cost me $400.....but its a custom grind cam! I should be looking at somewhere around 420hp hopefully......maybe a little more. After all of this I will be doing some drivetrain stuff. I have an m6, so that should hold up for a lil while until I can beef it all up. I'll let you know what happens with my Dyno run here in a couple months. With the forged internals that I am getting I have been told that I will be able to put a nice amount of spray into the engine without it hurting it. Good luck! Call Joe Overton though, kick *** LT1 guy

The only reason your cam is $400, is b/c, its probably a billet core camshaft..not to mention a custom grind.
