Theoretically: can you mix LT1 and SBC?

I've wondered this for a while. I have no intention to do it, I'm just curious:

With minimal machining and customizing, could you put an LT1 timing cover and opti on a regular SBC?

It seems to me that the LT1 timing set and opti would fit on a regular SBC block, and would all fit underneath a standard long water pump for an SBC.

Then, could you put vortec style heads on the hybrid SBC and install an LT1 intake manifold and injectors?

LT1 intake lacks the coolant crossover the Vortec heads need and the Vortecs are no better than LT1 heads anyway, they are based on the iron LT1 heads.

What are you looking to accomplish??

Prob not on the timing cover as don't most SBCs (non LT-1) have a WP that is driven off of the belt and not the cam gear as the LT-1 and therefore no hole in the timing cover. Also no on the the Vortec heads as I believe they have the same bolt pattern as the LS series motor for the manifold and the LT-1 mani is completely different. I don't think the runners would even line up. Seems like a ton of money when a good LT-1 block can be had for very cheaply as well as all the long block parts as well.

What are your plans?

I have no plans of doing this, like I said in my OP.

It just looks like the two blocks are similar enough that they could be mixed and matched.

SO.... The LT1 timing cover has an extra hole for the water pump drive. That seems like it could be blocked off easily enough.

What about the cylinder heads? would LT1 heads work with a regular SBC block?

They don't work without lots of expensive work. This is discussed often.

Assuming you mean the 96 gen 1 Vortecs not the later gen 3 Vortecs.
LT1 and gen 1 head bolt patterns are the same, guys have convertered LT1 heads to work on gen 1 blocks and more commonly converted gen 1 heads to work on LT1 blocks. Coolant passages are the biggest difference, cast iron is harder to modify than aluminum since it does not weld as well.

Same problem would apply to the block, would be difficult to modify because cast iron does not weld well.

I know a guy who built a Donovan aluminum block LT1, started with a gen 1 block and completely modified to to take everything LT1 even the mechanical waterpump. Again thou aluminum is easier to weld. He spent a LOT on that conversion too.
