TH400 dipstick question

TH400 dipstick question
I was talking to the guy that built my transmission about the dipstick issue and he said to find one out of an old van. He said it would probabally be long enough and I would just have to bend it to fit my needs. Is this true? Will it work??
Also...what to do about the speedometer? I don't know what year the transmission is but it has about a 1.5~2inch hole for the sensor and the mechanical ring in the tail shaft. Is all I got to do is order the right parts and Press the new reluctor gear in to replace the mechanical one. I've read several posts on this topic and I am still a bit confused. Could someone please shed some light on this for me?
Thanks to all that can help.

Call Madman and get the dipstick. 281-449-8833
The reluctor and ring can be ordered from GM. I don't have the part numbers in front of me, but look in the Drag Racing section for a post by Kazman. On the second page are the part numbers. I just got mine from Dal yesterday.

I guess my question about the speedo is...are all th400's the same?? Over 20 some years gm didn't mak any changes. If not that's great but I was just wondering. How difficult is it to install??
About the dipstick...How nuch do they cost from madman. If I can get one long enough for a little bit of nothing and bend it myself I would rather save the money. Just wondering.

Brian's TH400 sticks are prebent to work w/ the 4th gen firewall. I think mine was around $40.
The most notable change that I can recall on the 400s was that in '91 it was electronically controlled. That's where the electronic sensor comes from. You'll have to remove the tailshaft to install the reluctor gear. I'm working on it myself this week.
