Tell Me Why I Should NOT Get an MSD-6AL

I've heard some comments that they begin having problems after about a year or so. So is there any other reason why I should NOT get one?

If you buy one, you will have less money in your pocket.

I don't think I've read about anyone having problems with the ignition box......but I've tons about the blaster coils going bad.

I got mine as a gift - I wouldn't buy one myself for the money.

Reasons to get one: Because you need its specific functions for your application. S/C, Nitrous, timing issues, etc.

Reasons not to get one. Just to have it, stickers that come free with it, it looks cool.

I got better, quicker starts and my gas mileage did improve by 2-3 miles. I would try and get one on E-bay. save a few bucks.

Mine went out on me after about a year and LOW miles. Maybe 10K at the most. Only good thing about MSD is they usually replace their parts when they go bad. I still need to send mine back to get another one.

Re: Tell Me Why I Should NOT Get an MSD-6AL

Before the MSD... My car idled around 950 rpms...and wasn't very smooth.. .after wards it idles around 800... The rev limiter also comes in handy. ANd later on if you want to you can get a 2step kit and have fun with that. If you race your car and are serious it's worth the money. Really not a reason not to own one... unless your not into racing that much. It's a very good management device for your engine. Most of the people who have had problems with them failing and have been left stranded ETC.. probably hooked them up wrong.

I was told that the ignition boxes would overide what the computer was telling the car to do and could cause failures. Is this true?

Basically, no cons about the ignition box from you guys...just don't get it if you think it looks pretty.....

The MSD is a stand alone system, but it cuts into the stock wiring setup.

Unless the stock computer has programmign for a 2-step, window swith, and Pill set rev limiter... I can't see what programming it could harm.

If you set the rev limiter like 300 rpms before the PCM rev limiter... could you bounce off it like the ricers do? haha

I heard that the two are much different on how they set the rev limiter and the MSD is MUCH safer.

Re: Tell Me Why I Should NOT Get an MSD-6AL

if you set the msd limiter at any time you hit that rpm it will bounce off just like a normal limiter... i think msd is safer it uses a soft touch limiter that kills random cylinders at a time to keep the engine below it's max rpm then it fires the cylinders that it just disabled spark from to keep them from loading them up with fuel... i had my factory limiter removed and just used a msd 6300 pill for the limiter seemed to work out ok.

Re: Tell Me Why I Should NOT Get an MSD-6AL

6300RPM? I too have a '97, though it's an A4. I thought the max RPM was 6000 for this engine. Does the 6AL have a setting for 6000, or maybe even 5800?

So the benefits seems to outweigh the occasional problems encountered. I other than better gas mileage, and smoother idle, does the 6AL help in WOT runs?

To Chris, the stock rev limiter shuts off signals to the injectors to control RPM, which by MSD's claims can damage an engine due to an overly lean mixture. MSD's theory is to shut off the ignition, allowing unburnt fuel to pass through the exhaust, in effect causing an overly rich condition, which is pretty much safe for the engine...except maybe fouling the O2 sensors a bit quicker.
