Tall valve covers and reman alternator question

Murphy's law is doing its best to keep me from turning the key on my cam, rocker arm and etc. install

I purchased the ProForm Tall valve covers and was preparing to modify my alternator (new, remanufactured from Autozone a year ago) for clearance when I noticed the alternatror was different from the one shown in SVT Killer LV's tall valvecover thread

Grreat instructions by the way!!!

Anyhow, They area indicated in red in his pics to be ground down has the thread end of a screw protruding from it. Additionally I have and extra 7/16" dia tapped boss directly under the shaft.

Was wondering if anyone has run into this problem with a remanufactured alternator? I checked three parts stores today and they all had the same setup.

Has anyone had to modify a remanufactured alternator in this way? The screw sticking out of the back of the casting must be holding something together in there so I'm leery of grinding the boss and the screw away.

I could email a pic or two showing the problem area if anyone is interested..

grind=it

aloha moble,just replying to your thread.i have the same pro-fit(dosentquitefit) valve covers on my 95.what i had to do was remove the first altenator bracket and put in on the shelf.then i had to actually grind the side of the altenator to get it to fit(i wasnt to happy)...it will hold up o.k without the bracket.the schitty thing is if you want to set up your rocker arms you have to pull the altenator(thx pro-fit).good luck chow

thanks for the reply!

I realized before buying the valve covers that I would need to have shave material off of the alternator, just was worried that my alternator has a screw protruding out of a portion of the casting I would need to removed.
Screw it though, just had a few beers with a detroit buddy visiting town on business tonight, I may just as well grind away and hope for the best.
