My tach was going crazy before my opti died. It would pulse for a few seconds even after the car died.

Hold on try this,,,did you take off the coil....I just did a tune up even a hypertech coil, when I put it together, the tach jumped around when I floored it, only when I did that though. and then my ignition control module went out, that is connected to the coil, a little black plastic piece which takes a plug. anyway you might want to check it, to make sure you coil is bolted down good, and the grounding brackets are hooked up to them...

Re: tach jumps all over the place

i checked the opti wires and made sure the voltages were right and they were. i think your right about it not being grounded good because now its working fine. i also moved the set screw out a little bit. it looks like it done the trick the rpm still drops but it catches itself at about 500 rpm and levels off at around 900 rpm.

it still has the hard start issue after it warms up. any ideas on that?
its also running a little rich. i pulled a spark plug after the car was warmed up and it did not have fuel left on it. so i'm pretty sure its not getting enough fuel to start right up. or maybe a timing issue.
