Ta Cover Leak.....

I have a TA Cover on my rear end and it has a small leak (about 2-4 drops a day). I torqued it on properly using a brand new gasket. The leak appears to be at the very bottom of the housing. Do I need to use a RTV type sealant instead? Any other possible fixes?
Thanks.

Re: Ta Cover Leak.....

I just made sure I sanded/scuffed the housing and used a Fel-Pro gasket with a little blue RTV to hold the gasket to the cover...torqued to 25 ft/lbs and no leak....yet...Using too much RTV will cause it to get sueezed out when you torque the cover bolts...

Re: Ta Cover Leak.....

I've never had good experiences with cork gaskets, they seem to be semi-permeable and always let a little through.

I know that your talking rear-end, but when I did the trans-go I used just black rtv on the trans pan and haven't had any leaks at all. The cork gasket that came with the kit was letting afew drops through a day...and I torqued everything down to specs, and that was before I even started the car(no increased temps or pressures).

Re: Ta Cover Leak.....

What I have done in the past make sure ALL surfaces that you're going to mate are clean. Then put a thin bead of RTV on the differential itself. Then put your gasket over the bead. (This will help your gasket to not slide around also.) Lastly, put a small bead of RTV on the cover and install carefully. Make sure to not move it around too much once its on. I've done this three times with no leaks what so ever.

Re: Ta Cover Leak.....

i am gonna burn in hell for this one but.... When i do rear end covers i use tha standard thin felpro or factory type gaskets with a bit of #1 hardning permatex on each side. Torque to 25 pounds and let it dry for at least an hour. I put a tab on the bolts too just for a light weight thread locker. Clean and degrease the gasket surfaces well before install. This method has treated me well for 20 plus years.

I know this is off topic, but did you buy a retro-fit kit to make the lt1 work in the porsche? A friend and his dad are getting ready to start the same thing on his 944 that just dropped a valve in the 200,000 mile 4 banger.....I guess renegade sells a kit that comes with a plate that will allow the lt1 to bolt up to the 5speed in the car......do you have any links or tips, or info on your car........it would be appreciated.
