T-56: Rebuild or Buy Brand New?

I recently took my T-56 out of my '95 Formula to my mechanic thinking I was going to replace my 3rd and 4th gear synchros that had been grinding for the past 9 months or so. I hadn't had the money to do it, well I sold a car and now I can. So...I go into it thinking it was gonna be $300 for synchros, $300 for the labor. Well....I should've known after 9 months that something else would be bad in it. Turns out that it was so bad, he took it to a reputable transmission shop in OKC and they said that there were very few parts that could be reused.

So now I can either pay $1000 for a complete rebuild with new synchros and other 'used parts' (gears and other misc. stuff). OR I can pay $1450 for all new stuff....OR buy a new used tranny....OR a brand new T-56 for the cheapest price I can find.

What do you guys think? My car isn't heavily 'modded' at all, it's a daily driver with CAI & exhaust and puts down 281 RWHP. In the future I plan on installing a new clutch when the stocker that's in the car goes bad....and maybe a mild heads/cam package and a rearend under it.

Is it worth buying new for the money? Any input would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

I don't remember the person but he would rebuild the t-56 and make it bullet proof adding a few upgrades like a steel shift fork. I believe his price was $1750 about 300 dollars less than a new tranny, thats what I would do.

that 1750 one was custom with custom steel retainers or something like that and some other stuff...

Personally i said screw it and picked up a brand new one for 2100 dollars witha steel 3rd gear shift fork.

but if yours is stockish just get a rebuilt one.. check ebay. if possible try to get one where u dont haev to give your core because its worth money... u could get a few hundred bucks out of it at least if synchros are bad. that'd offset the cost of a rebuilt one at 1400 dollars or so,
