Summit Electric Water Pump?

Summit Electric Water Pump?

Well, I have decided to go ahead and get an electric water pump for my Camaro. I was looking in the Summit catalog and they had their brand EWP for around$152 and the Meizeire EWP for $200. Anyone used the Summit brand or is it just junk?

It looks pretty identical to the CSI/CSR pump.

i have the CSR...it's great. longer warranty and just good...and it's cheaper

Not many have used the Summit brand. Most don't mind spending the 50 more to have a name brand they know works and lasts.

P.S. Summit usually carries great products, I just can't vouch for this specific pump since I have no experience with it or heard of anyone running one.

Summit carries the CSR (aka CSI) pump as well.

The Summit brand pump is not the same as the CSR... if you look at the impeller's of the two you'll see the Summit one uses the modern "centrifugal" vanes, while the CSR/CSI uses the old straight-paddle design used in 50's chevies. The Summit design looks very similar to the Meziere vane design.

Either vane arrangement will work, though i'd give pretty good odds the Summit and Meziere vanes are more efficient than the older CSR design.

With electric pumps though the real test is the motor itself... either vane config has proven itself... I was just pointing out that the Summit pump is definitely not the CSR pump on a discount.

BTW,
The CRS and Summit pumps both flow about the same. The Meizure pump comes in 2 trim levels, both of which flow more... but do you need it?

55 GPM (3.50" tall, draws 8.0 Amps, 4.6 pounds) - Meizure Heavy Duty
43 GPM (3.00" tall, draws 8.0 Amps, 3.6 pounds) - Meizure
30 GPM (?.??" tall, draws 6.1 Amps, 3.0 pounds) - Summit / CVR
30-37 GPM (2.75" tall, draws 5.8 Amps, pounds? ) - CSR / CSI

If you look over the electric pumps available for Gen 1 SBC's and BBC's you'll see that 30-35 GPM is nealy universal for flow rates.

If you have a high-flow pump you'll probably get little benefit from it unless you've upgraded to a larger radiator core. I have a cooling system book that mentions high-flow thermostats being a requirement for increasing flow rates in a system as they are the largest bottle neck in any system. With that in mind, I'd find it hard to belive there's any real flow rate difference between the 4 pumps.

If anyone knows where to get a high-flow LT1 thermostat (not interchangeable with SBC)... I'm interested.

A lower HP car does NOT need the BIG Meizure pump.
If ya run the right coolant ya can do away with the "T" stat.
Ya have to block the bypass hole and ya are good to go.

Be Cool in Essexville, MI claims they make a "high flow" for the LT1.
Jegs, for one, carries Be Cool parts.

Hmmm.... thermostat options:

AC-Delco #12TH10E (195*)
GM#12555290 thermostat (180*, stock, aka AC-Delco #12TH10D)
Stant SuperStat 45218 (180*)
Stant Thermostat 14218 (180*)
Hypertech PowerStat 1008 (160*)
BeCool ??? (website shows a balanced stat design, but no part numbers)

Robertshaw apparently doesn't make one for the LT1, neither does Mr.Gasket (their High Performance balanced-design is similar to Robertshaws).

The Stant SuperStat seems like a good replacement for stock:
uses a high flow venturi for maximum cooling capacity during high temperature, high load operation and employs a patented Weir ValveŽ for precise flow metering during cold weather, light load operation to ensure stable temperature control ...opening spring is designed with a load that is 50% stronger than our standard...thermostat flange thickness of 0.040" is 33% thicker than our standard and up to 43% thicker than competition...power element is comparable to those used in heavy-duty trucks. Its actuator piston is 25% larger than standard and 56% larger than competators.
Nothing earth-shattering... but couldn't hurt. My stock stat lasted 10 years and 230,000 miles, but I'm replacing it while I do the pump. Apparently most manufactureres reccomend replacing the thermostat every 5 years, and the rad cap every 2 to 3 years.

Stewart Components makes a cool in-line electric water pump option to use as a suppliement to the stock pump, or in place of the pump. They also go a step further and integrate a high-flow radiator, large electric fan, and an electric waterpump into one housing... less hoses, lighter package.

Be Cool also shows a electric-pump / rad unit but it's listed in the custom cooling section.

Neither the BeCool or Stewart systems are exactly a street LT1 upgrade ... but cool options for a racer.

I ran the summit e-wp for about 2months then I started getting nervous and put the stock mechanical back in.. I may put it back in and wire a warning system... But here in central fl it gets dam hot and i dont need that thing to just fail out without warning...

Im running the summit EWP and its worked flawlessly for over 2 years now. My car is a daily driver and Ive got almost 50,000 miles on the Summit water pump. I dont know about the current draw or anything like that, BUT I do know the summit pump and mezire standard duty pump have the exact same impeller. Ive compaired them side by side. AND the summit pump has a purple anodized body just like the Mezire. Its very possible that the summit pump could be a Mezire with a different front cover. All summits products are name brand parts with the summit name stuck on them. If you do the math on 50,000 miles thats still only 833 hours of opperation if you figure an average of 60mph (I drive on the interstate ALOT so thats a resonable average for me). Ive seen alot of posts about the EWPs haveing a 5000 hour life expectancy, so mine still has alot of live left in it. I figure with all the idleing and stuff it would probably be closer to 1000 hours. But anyway, the summit pump has worked great for me and the other 2 Ive installed are still running 100% as well. Also my car with long tube headers,CC306 cam, stock 140,000 mile radiator, 160 t-stat and the summit water pump never gets over 180 degrees idleing in traffic on a 80+ degree day. I run the biggest baddest there is

55 GPM- Meizure Heavy Duty. I did it for reliability reasons.
