Suggestion for Custom Grind Cam

Any suggestion for custom grind camshaft for 383LT1:

Race only not DD
HR Camshaft
CNC ported LT1 heads
CR 10.8:1
Ported stock intake
58 TB
3-speed Auto Transmission
3600 stall
4.10-4.56 rear gear
2860Ib weight

Would like to turn not less than 450RWHP.
Who should I trust to do me this custom grind camshaft?

Re: Suggestion for Custom Grind Cam

Crane tech support did me good but keep in mind that you usually pick cam, converter and rear gear together. Having limited the rear gear and converter may box you in.

not less than 450RWHP.

That is tough requirement for a LT1 headed, Hydraulic Cammed, Stalled Automatic LT1

Most of the guys running 450+ are Solid Roller, aftermarket Casting Head cars

SSstrokerace can cut cams
LaZer Cams cut mine
Any of the shelf cams can do custom grinds.....give a few of them a call and see who you feel the best about going with.

Re: Suggestion for Custom Grind Cam

bret bauer (sstroker ace) is the man! I'm waiting to put the beast he made for me in..i have very very similar requirements and specs but a little more compression and a 4l60e w/3.73's in the rear.
look for track times, not just horsepower, though. big power where you don't use it doesn't help. that's why custom cams are great.

Re: Suggestion for Custom Grind Cam

Thanks for the input from all.

Problem with aftermarket heads for LT1 is that they come with 64cc or 74cc. My LT1 heads are 54cc. That would drop my comression alot.

I don't want to change pistons since I have complete forged Eagle rotating assemply with JE pistons (-16cc dish pistons). Tell me which aftermarket LT1 heads will keep my compression almost unchange.

All I can think of is fully ported LT4 with port matched LT4 intake and a good cam, could be a solid one but not sure I should throw away newly installed beehive springs, nonself aligned Comp RR, guide plates and new lifters for a soild roller setup.

I hope bret bauer catches this thread.

Just have the heads milled to the same cc combustion chamber....I am running a 48cc LT1 head on my 94

With that much of milling, the whole valve train geometry will have to change to set it up right.

I doubt the Trick flow 64cc heads can be milled to 54cc.

Re: Suggestion for Custom Grind Cam

Do not use -16cc pistons, that's pretty much the compression killer of the century. No aftermarket head is going to get you any compression with that.

At least do a flat top. How many cubes are we talking about?

FWIW the cam is only part of getting you rwhp number.

-16cc pistons already there and have to live with it. Had to use them with 54cc LT1 heads for pump gas. Can't use flat pistons with stock cc LT1 heads without race gas.

385ci to be exact. 3.75" stroke, 4.040" bore, 6.0" rods.

Re: Suggestion for Custom Grind Cam

wew I do flat top 383's all the time with LT heads and that combustion chamber. Beleive me you can USE flat top pistons on pump gas easily with these motors.

Honestly for what you are doing a set of TFS heads and a blower, you would be perfect. No way NA your going to get 450rwhp unless the heads are double throw down with that compression, just ain't gonna happen.

What was the CR of your stock headed 383 engine with flat top pistons running on pump gas. I'm sure you were using a camshaft with alot of overlap to bleed off cylinder pressure to be able to run on pump gas. I mean your dynamic compression should be within the limits of pump gas use.

Since my engine is in a Hybrid, not an F-body, I could sell it and for the cost of TFS+Blower, I could swap a built LS1 that will get me my goals easly with a Head/Cam package.

I still have that addiction to LT1 motors. Thinking maybe I should get a Head/Cam swap with solid roller detup to get 450RWHP. Is that possible. Can I do it with my current heads.

What do I need to change in the valve train to swap to solid roller camshaft other than solid roller lifters. Will my current Beehive and 1.52 Comp Cams Roller Rockers work with solid roller setup. How much should I expect to pay in parts only to convert to solid roller camshaft with current heads.
