Question Stud girdles

What brand of stud girdles are you guys running? What valve covers are you guys running if you are using stud girdles? Are they tall valve covers? If so, what do you do about the alternator? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks for your help in advance.

Re: Stud girdles

I did some research on this a while back.

After talking to some of the builders on here, I decided that its not worth the time money and effort in 99.99% of the LT1 builds. Inless you are going to have a solid roller, so radical, with crazy springs, ... Basically, think racecar, not street car. Its just not worth the money.

If however, you DO deicde to go ahead and do it, I was able to bend ( Heated and tapped with ball pean hammer ) a tiny dent into the cover to clear the alternator. Its alot easier to do this than some of the goofy accessory brackets out there.

Re: Stud girdles

i went with comp girdles, and i have trickflow tall valve covers. i had a special crome smaller alternator made with 140amps made. i have dual valve springs with .600 lift, and a custom grind cam. my car is not done yet, but im only a week away. i like the girdles, i know i can rev to 7000-7500rpms and not hurt anything on top

Re: Stud girdles

The reason for asking is that I may go with AFR 227's from loyd elliot and I will have a custom cam with apprx. .650 lift. I heard of alternator relocator brackets but I wasn't for sure where I am suppose to relocate the alternator to.

Re: Stud girdles

nick3 ~ Your not revving that high on your computer ... Stock PCM is limited at 7000-7200RPM's Piece of **** PCM.

At any rate, if your building a street strip car, save your money.

If your building a car that will see nothign but high-rpm's, such as a strip or auto-X car, then it MIGHT be worth it.

Alot of engine builders say their a waste inless you are going with a solid lifter cam, and going to be spinning it up past 6500-7000 regularly. With the stock PCM cutting out at 7200 RPM's, this makes them a waste in 99.99% of builds.

I have a set that were made for my motor, but I haven't figured out a valve cover/alternator combo to make them fit yet. They do look nice on my book shelf next to my supercharger and other things yet to be installed.

Re: Stud girdles

A girdle setup is a lot of work... I have a invoice around someplace with the total cost on it. Basically it's just a little bit more for shaft mounts.

Re: Stud girdles

nick3 ~ It doesnt matter. All the rev limiter does is prevent an over rev condition. The stock PCM is not capable of calculations past 7200RPM's. You wouldnt get any spark or injector pulse width. And dont be fooled by the stock tach, there is absolutely no way, tune or not, to get a stock PCM to fuction past 7200RPMs ... And I think ( Not sure though ) that OBD I cars calculate spark and pulse width past 7000RPMs even. Do a search on it, im sure you can find more about it than I know ...

Re: Stud girdles

ill do that. like i said the car isnt done yet, so i havent found this out yet. who sells a pcm for this? and i think that 7000-7200rpms would be close enough i hope. i wont really know untill after my break in period. i will set the msd to 7000rpms.

Re: Stud girdles

Im not real sure what your options would be at that point?

You could always call PCMforless. Im sure Bryan or Alvin would be more than willing to give you a quick run down. They definatly know their **** ...

Good luck with the car, and PM me when its done. I wanna know what she puts down/how she runs. Sounds whicked.
