striped the thread on the intake manifold

well i found the leak, when i had the car worked on a yea ago they must have striped the threads in the hole, when i went to take off the manifold it was not tight at all...

anyways i got the manifold back on before i figured out it was striped...

whats the best way to fix something like this, its not the bolt cause i tried new bolts...i was told a healey coil(sp) can this be put on with the manifold on or do i have to take it off thread it and then put everything back on??

thanks for the help

the car is a 1997z28 camaro if anyone needs to know stock intake.

Have you taken the intake manifold back off of the engine to inspect it? You ought to be able to take it to a machine shop to see about it being repaired.

You could honestly probably find a used intake manifold for the price it'll cost you to get yours repaired. I have one complete with fuel rails if youre interested. Just send me a PM.

the threads arent on the intake manifold itself, its what it bolts down to- the block......

Ah. That shouldnt be too much of a problem. You can get most likely get that repaired with helicoil kit.

Give your local machine shop a call.

Actually the intake manifold bolts down on the heads, see this diagram from Shoebox's site:

You could heli-coil the heads.

Re: striped the thread on the intake manifold

Heli-coiling involves drilling the old threads out then tapping them to the next larger size then finally inserting a spring like coil to bring them back to the original size, theoretically when doing it to aluminum you get a stronger thread as well, the problem is theres a lot of metal shavings and if its in an awkward place on the head you can screw it up even worse (think drilling it at an angle so the threads no longer are straight in line with the hole in the intake). If the hole is under the cowl I wouldn't bother heli-coiling it on the car chances are itl'l get messed up, you would be better off pulling the head. If however its up torwards the front just be very carefull about keeping the shavings out of your oil and when you are tapping the threads in the head be sure to spray wd-40 on your tap and keep it well lubricated. You should be able to pick up a helicoil kit for that size for 25$ at most... I payed 20$ at carquest for a kit to heli-coil the bolt for my alternator and generally the smaller the bolt the cheaper the kit. Kits typically include several heli-coils, a tap and a tool to insert the heli-coil, the only thing you need is an appropriately sized drill bit.
