Strange metallic sound prior to and during starting

I am currently having what I believe is a starter problem because during cranking, the starter makes a grinding sound, similar to when you turn the key with the engine already running. It is also a weak start with irregular cranking. The other problem is when I turn my key to the first position (run), i can hear the fuel pump hum, then stop, which is normal but at the end of it I can hear three metallic clanking sounds which is not normal. Would this be because of the starter as a result of the starter or selonoid engergizing?

Any ideas?

Your solenoid may be hanging up.
Unfortunately, I've never heard of anyone selling the solenoid seperately so you'll have to get a starter.

I would jack the car up and secure it on stands. Have a buddy attempt to start it. Take a hammer and tap the solenoid with the handle. If it stops it is probably the solenoid haning up.

Very good to know.
