strange belt noise

im not sure if this is a case of a bad belt or not but it squeaks extremely loud at idle, the AC kinda quit working as soon as it started making the noise but the compressor is fairly new so i dont think thats the problem, i examined the belt briefly and it doesnt look to be horribly torn up or anything..any ideas?

Look very closely for any signs of a fluid leakage onto the belt. It can cause it to slip horribly making lots of noise and possibly not turn the compressor.

Keep in mind that it's not at all uncommon to have an AC compressor installed and they fail to remove all moisture from the system... which can cause problems with the compressor itself. The refrigerant need to dry with the proper amount of lubricant.
