Storing Heads in Trash bags & Intake rust?
Storing Heads in Trash bags & Intake rust?
I have a set of fully ported MTI/GTP LT1 heads and intake, I dont want to leave them in the garage any more because I'm worried they may get stolen. I have had my tools stolen before and these heads would be a big loss to me. Can I put them in some glad trash bags and store them inside? I notice they ship heads in bags, another question would be, I noticed my intake manifold has some what looks like rust on the bottom on the metal pan under it, this normal? Its the intake that goes with heads and they have been off the car for about year now. Evntually they are all going to the machine shop for some more work but till then I'm eating ramen noodles and eating store brand bread/ H/c LT1 in 2076 bisches
in the variable northeast climate with no problem. I put some rice in the bottom of bags to suck up the moisture and condensation that can form as i keep them in my detached unheated garage. Usually around a half of box a bag. Put the rice in a zip loc bag and poke some holes through it.

Awesome thanks Jim, did you have a restored red Iroc at one point? I think some one had a web site with a really clean one they restored.

The aluminum heads/intake will form a light corrosion if left dry.
All you have to do is put a light coat of WD-40 on everything. I've stored freshly bored engine blocks for a few years with no damage.
My CNC ported heads are sitting on the garage floor this way for over a year & look like new.

3 in 1 oil makes a spray white lithium grease like assy lube, white lube, etc.I have used it on stroker cranks store for 2 years in plastic bags, with no rust and on the Gulf Coast that's amazing. I got it at Lowes. I generally have to take time to relube everything every few months.
WD40 dries up and I had a crank in a plastic bag that rusted, just like on my gun's, it's no good for that down here.

I use stuff called "Iron Clad" a basic protectant that lasts forever on steel/cast, I have fully machined blocks that have been in storage for over 10 years that have been pulled out and look fresh.
