If i was having clearance issues with my stock valve covers, would it quiet down considerably when the car warms up?

thanks!

Re: stock valve cover clearance?

I don't know what kind of 1.6 RR's I have....I will try to find out form my builder. At this point, I'm just wondering hypothetically, if I DID have a clearance issue with my stock valve covers, would the noise quiet down once it gets good and warm or would it stay consistent regardless of heat. My ticking noise is loudest when it's cold, then quiets down to where you can barely notice it when it's hot. I've just been through two different kinds of lifters trying to get it to quiet down and it's still about the same. I got to wondering about clearance with my stock valve covers because I haven't made any modifications to them (unless my builder did)

It would be constant if it was a clearance issue. Are you sure its not an exhaust leak that you hear ticking? Sounds to me like it might be because you say its quieter when it warms up...

Re: stock valve cover clearance?

i've had it checked for an exhaust leak from two different shops and they say it's not. my builder says it's the lifters having to pump up in the morning when it's cold and it ticks until the oil makes it way all in there. i have, of course, also had the valves completely adjusted to make sure it wasn't that.

Re: stock valve cover clearance?

piston slap will clear with temps. you likely have that if he did rotating assembly stuff.

Re: stock valve cover clearance?

well, he just got through tearing it all back down to make sure it wasn't a galled piston or anything along those lines. he said everything looked perfect. now i know there's always that chance that he's feeding me a line, but he is considered the best and most reputable in town where i live.

just out of curiosity, if it was piston slap....is that causing any damage over time if i kept driving it?

Re: stock valve cover clearance?

as long as you let the engine warm before you do any real driving you'll be fine. just keep your foot off the throttle until normal temps or dont even drive it until it's at operating temps.
