Stock Shifter??

Is there anyway without tearing into my console to tell if my shifter is stock or not? I keep reading how loose stock shifters are and I'm wondering if the previous owner installed something else. It is defiantly not loose at all in fact when I purchased the car I took notice how much tighter it was from my trade in rice crap. I slid the boot down and the shifter has Hurst engraved into it, is that on a stock shifter? When the car is in neutral its still not "loose", in gear there is no side to side movement at all. Just curious. Thanks for any help!

The hurst shifter was a $325 option I believe. I would suspect that it either came on your car or the previous owner had it installed. (It is a relatively easy install.) ... hope that helps.... steve c

So what was the advantage of this option? Is it accually a "short throw" shifter? I have been thinking about installing a short throw but maybe not now. Is this better then or equal too an aftermarket shifter? Thanks for the info!

The easiest way is to just remove the shifter Boot. It is held in by a plastic snap ring around the entire thing and just pops out. Be careful not to break it though, although it's easy to fix with a paperclip and some 5 min epoxy (I've had to fix mine before if you can't tell).

The Factory shifter will have a large round rubber bushing where the stick meets the shifter, an aftermarket shifter the stick will bolt directly to the shifter.

A hurst shifter was an option in the F-1 category if you didn't get the SS which it came on standard. However, the factory hurst wasn't all that great. A true aftermarket shifter will have a fairly straight stick.
