stock lifters and 1/4 turn preload?

I've been having problems with getting enough vaccuum out of my car for it to run properly.. I know stock the recommended preload is a 1/2-3/4 turn of preload, but wanted to see if i'd be able to get more vaccuum by only 1/4 turn of preload (I think it might have the lifter bottomed out and be holding a valve slightly open.) Would a 1/4 turn be sufficient preload for the stock lifters and not cause the rockers to "tick"?

yes the less vacuum you have the better. Even zero lash will work.

I take it you meant "the less preload I have the better"...

I'm running 1/4 turn preload on stock lifters with 7/16 studs. There's very minimal noise from the valve train.
