Still have a problem with tuning after cam!

The guy did a little tuning tonight and didnt get much accomplished. He thinks theres a vacuum leak because the maps were high at low rpms and idle. When more throttle was applied it read normal. Before tuning my car would almost cut off at idle. The rpms would drop then stabilize. Well, he fixed that, but before I left he did another change and now my idle sucks again. He didnt have time to ride in the car and get some WOT runs to work out all the bugs. Hopefully he can do it this weekend. The car also kinda bucks if the gear im in is a to low of a rpm! Any suggestions?

How many miles on your car? If it's a higher mileage car, Did u replace ur Lifters with the Cam install?

My car has no upper RPM power, and idle seems a little off as well. After checking Tuning, Fuel, Ignition, we finally found out that the problem is bad Lifters. One of the things that hinted at this was my Vacuum Pressure was all over the place.

I think it's something worth looking into

My car only has about 86k on it. He said the lifters were fine! Although the vacuum is bad at low rpms but gets better when throttle is applied. The maps were bouncing all around!

One more thing! Since I have a 97 and it used to be an OBDII car now a OBDI. He took off the EGR pump and all that crap. Could this have anything to do with my problems. He also removed some other stuff!

Did the car run fine before you did the cam swap?

Mine did. It ran pretty damn strong for just bolt ons. Then we swapped the cam and stuff, then it felt sluggish. My buddy seems to think its a misplaced plug or something. Possibly an injector. Who knows.

How much vaccum are you showing? I have the same problem, and I am thinking that somehow I have an internal vaccumm leak....... With the XE 230/236 I show about 10 inches with no load, at around 850 rpms.

What are yours?

What kinda problems are you having? Is the car running bad or just not as strong? My car is running fine and I can feel a little bit of power but not like I should. We think its and electrical problem like a plug or wire! Hopefully thats all it is.

Im not sure where the vacuum is at. I just know it was unstable at idle. I can ask my buddy who scanned it and see what he says. Maybe we should stay in touch in case one of us figures it out first then we can let each other know what helped.

maybe the "bucking in too low of a gear" is just cam surge i dont know wether your cam would cause that, but i know mine does. the only other time my car was bucking in too low a gear (this was before the cam, btw), was when i had bad plug wires.

now, i read your other thread where you spoke of these problems, and people already said it may be your rr's are too tight, causing the "death" at idle. you seemed to rule that out, but that would be my "not very experienced" guess as well.

hth and good luck

Yes the bucking at a low speed is a characteristic trade off of swapping cams.

Since then the bucking has kinda smoothed out. Now it bucks in 6th gear because of the load on it. We still havent figured that one out. The RR's are right. He pulled the valve covers off yesterday and checked them. They are ok and not backing off at all. We still think its electrical. If it is a bad plug or wire could that be causing some of my starting problems?

by "backing off at all", you mean you checked wether they were too loose? i think you should check wether theyre too tight.

when youre in 6th and under 2k rpm, under load, does the shifter shake like crazy? i know when my wires went bad (my fault btw, too rough on them ), they , or it, was broken internally. it wasnt burnt or nothing. it would buck under load in 6th (below 2 grand), and the shifter would shake violently. i dont remember wether the car was starting fine or not though, sorry bout that.

im not guaranteeing anything here, just sounds familiar.

if i remeber correctly in your last post, you had said Brian or Madwolf had done your tuning, correct? im pretty certain your tuning should be fine if it was them who tuned it, and i wouldnt mess around with it necessarily. i mean, they know how to tune for a cam, etc. i dont think your tune is taht complex, ya know.

Yeah man! In 6th gear under the heavy load my shifter does shake some and it bucks like a damn rodeo bull! You think thats my plugs or wires?

Yeah, Brian from pcmforless tuned it. I think Im good there.

i know when mine was doing the exact same thing it was the wires. took it to a mechanic to check wether it was that or the plugs, he was saying everything was fine needless to say, i bought a new set of wires and it ran like a champ again id recommend you try that. not too expensive, but kind of a pain in the *** to do might as well change the plugs while youre at it just to eliminate those as the problem as well. im pretty confident if you change those, especially the wires, youll be good to go

hth and good luck
