Starter Wiring
Starter Wiring
I figured out all my starter problems on why I could not get a lt1 starter to fit in my truck. I accidently used the truck flexplate, which was a 168 tooth. Well I am swapping my transmission and torque converter out tomorrow night and figured I would go ahead and swap the flexplate, new tranny mount, and starter.
Got a flexplate from a member here off a 94z, 153 tooth.
Bought a hitachi style rotatable 3hp starter from local speed shop.
Energy suspension transmission mount./
The question is: The starter has two posts, and they are both large posts. The old starter had one small and one large so it was a fool-proof hookup. Their is no literature or marking telling me which wire to put on which post! Also their is a small spade terminal sticking out, which I would assume is for a ground, but I have never used one before?

Here's a picture of what I am speaking of. The large wire that runs into the starter comes from the post I have labeled 12v battery. That should be correct? Then the other is Acc, and the spade terminal is the ground. I do not have a ground hooked up now, and their is no provision on my current starter for one. Should I just run one and ground it to the block for safety?
If you had a closer pic of the solenoid, straight on from the top, I could tell more what you have. One of the large terminals should have a strap that goes into the starter motor casing. Nothing connects to that. Use the other larger terminal for your positive battery cable. The spade terminal would likely be your switch terminal. Most GMs have a purple wire that goes to that one. No ground wire should go there. The starter is grounded through the casing to the block.
You might also look to see if there are some embossed letters on the solenoid cap. S=switch (probably that spade terminal and purple wire should go to it). B=Battery (large terminal for battery cable).

The one that I have labeled 12v power has the strap that goes into the casing. Their is nothing labeled on the starter at all. On the nut that has the wire going into the casing, their is a ring terminal that is tightened already with the nut.
