today i went to tim hortons. came out and tryed to start car and nothing. not a tic or anything. Starter? i disabled VATS with tunercat so it cant be related to that correct?
Also are there any advantages to a lt4 starter vs a lt1 starter?

well my starter when it went bad when i turned the key it made a fan type sound, like it was spinning but nothing happened.

but when my ignition switch failed my key turned and none of the lights (dash) came on and nothing happened.... still could work the radio but the ignition didnt work...

so thats my 2 cents.

and certainly im not telling u its either of them im just letting u know my symptoms

 

yes, all lights and radio and everything works fine in my car.

 

does the starter make a spinning sound? u might need someone else to listen for u...(this is the symptom of mine there could be more)

 

i heard nothing at all. i had t tops off too.

 

It could be that your starter is completely gone. Which it doesn’t sound like because they usually make some kind of nose even when they are bad, or it's not getting any power for some reason. Also it could be your park safety switch is bad.

 

turned out to be the passlock system. Had to replace the ignition cylinder. i have q a questions though. IS VATS related to the pass key sys? Because i disabled vats through tunercat so i thought it would bypass the anti theft system?

 

Dunno if anyone brought it up yet but I had that problem and the chip in my key was bad. Try and brush the ignition key with some rubbing lcohol and see what happens.

 

Ignition cylinder? Where exactly is that, I am having similar problems.

i think he means the entire part that turns with the key. i wonder if the keys go bad the same way flash memory cards do?

The "chip" in the key is a resistor. Oh and if all of your lights come on and go of including the security light, and the starter makes no sound at all check the clutch position sensor. I had the same problem and I went thru about $200 before I found that sensor and fixed the problem with a 10 Cent piece of wire.

Even with Vats disabled in the PCM it can still prevent you from starting the car. The part of vats you disabled with the tuner cat was the fuel control part of it. There is a second part that is a starter kill. Either your key is dirty/bad or the "eye" in the ignition switch that reads that pellet went bad. Do you have another key to try?

If you check shoebox's website it will tell you how to disable the starter kill.

 

I guess I'll try another key before buying a new starter.
