Starter replacement

So i was under the car the other night gonna replace the starter dropped it in a matter of seconds and forgot about the stupid exhaust, so i popped it back up in there for a little bit. Question is how can i get around the exhaust, when my friend and i dropped my starter before i dont think that we had to do much with the exhaust but i dont remember. Anyone got any tips of how to get around the exhaust for the starter? Or do I have to drop the rusted *** Y pipe? dont really wanna deal with that till i do the whole exhaust next month, oh 96 z28 6sp btw :P

I believe you can drop the flywheel cover and get it out on 95 + cars. Thats what I had to do to get mine out.

Re: Starter replacement

When I replaced the starter on my 94, I had to unbolt it and turn it around with the gear nose facing up towards the hood and pull it down backwards... I have an automatic so I unbolted the trans line bracket near the motor mount too so it would move some.. It came out without dropping the exhaust.

Re: Starter replacement

move the trans lines out of the holder. We did this on my buddies 96 z28. We never touched the exhaust.

Starter replacement

Im not sure what you are trying to do? If it is just remove the starter...it is 2 bolts on a bracket, and a few electrical wires that need to be unbolted. I just did mine yesterday, and it was very easy. The hardest part was finding a wrench small enough for one of the electrical wire fittings. It just slipped out also... I dont think I was much help, however I dont really know exactly what you are trying to do

Starter replacement

OHHHHHH, your y pipe is IN

Yes, it is 10 times easier if it is out. I was doing the full ORY headers and CB exhaust so it was all out of there. I cant see how you could do that without taking 2 or 3 hours on every bolt WITH the exhaust in place and twisting/contorting the starter to squeeze it out. With the time you will spend unboling the y pipe, things will even out with the time it would take to fumble around blindly trying to get that thing off.

will

Re: Starter replacement

Well got it out took about 40 min of ****in around in 40 degree weather with 15wind chill so yea anyway total project took about an hour and 30mins. the starter you have to bring it down reverse, so the part that is facing the back of the car has to be facing the front. nd then turn the part that is facing the front of the car up and the starter will drop out.(in simple words flip it from its original position, and then turn it vertically and wiggle it and it will fall out. ps the part that should be sticking up towards the sky should be the end that was facing the front of the car after you flipped it)it just takes a little bit of tinkering with. Sry if this is confusing tried to be as descriptive and simple as possible

Re: Starter replacement

Your car is a six speed, you have no lines running from the tranny, you should be able to drop that bad boy right out. For an auto, its a different story, lines or ypipe must come off.
