You may not have your starter shimmed right, and what your hearing is the starter gear not fully disengaging from the flywheel, not the rockers. Just and idea.
Starters breaking the nose is often a sign of kickback from over advanced timing and since the pinging only occurs on acceleration it is also likely an over advanced condition. IMHO.

I think you have two separate problems. I would take out the starter, and inspect the flywheel. And about the pinging on acceleration, how long has it been since you done a tune up?
