Starter Issue ?

Hey all i just bought my first 4th gen today a 95 Z28, problem is starter turns the engine over really slow then clicks, like a dead battery. I have not checked volts while cranking with a DVM but the dash guage drops to like 8 volts. Battery is a brand new Die Hard platnum. Also if you try to turn it over for too long some smoke comes from the starter area. Where should I start? Cables Maby? the bolt for the battery was pretty rusted/corroded.

From my hella experience in the starter and alternator business (my daily grind) I would say its your starter. If im correct (not seein this for myself in person) and what you saying is that your starter was draging very badly so BOOM your problem would have been in the brushes and/or the omiture. continuing to hold it down would more than deffanatly cause it to smoke(this means that you have ruined the brush holder( regardless your going to have to have the starter bebuilt. OR buy a new one Beeing that is a reduction gear starter the price on a new one won't be that cheap( if i were you i would find a bebuild shop and have it done.

Turning it with a low battery and holding it down is where you went wrong.
Also i would do away with the Die hard battery Why you think they call them die hard cause thats what they do lol.

Hope this helped
P.S. dont buy a new one from Auto Zone. THERE CRAP

Jumpin it wont make any difference. The cables should be fine In the past year i have only hade to replace 1 cable for a starter only reason for that was it was a restoration job on a 66 chevy pickup. DONT buy the starter from the ZONE if you buy anything make damn sure that it does not say MEXICO anywhere on it. Buy the OE ACDELCO replacement if you want the best life out of it cause its a bit of a job to replace....... if it wasn't for having to drop the exhaust it would be smooth sailing
