Stall Converter Questions

Last year I put hotcam in my car along with most of the mods in my sig. Ever since then the car idled at 1000 rpm's in gear w/ the computer reprogrammed. I tried setting the idle lower to around 850 or so and the engine would not idle smoothly at that rpm.
So I was told a higher stall converter would help it idle lower.

What it is the stall on the stock converter?

And any recommendations for a lock-up converter that is about 300 rpm above stock would be helpful.

And do I need to get the computer reprogrammed to idle lower after I install the converter?
Thanks

don't bother with only 300 rpm over stock. You need around a 3000 stall converter to take advantage of the power you have.
A stock cam works well with a 2400-2800 converter, and your rpm range is a little higher now.

I would suggest a minium of a 2800 and make sure you get a decent one like a yank or vigi with a STR of about 2.5 or higher. This will keep the heat down in your trans and make itbarely noticeable on the street. But your car will absolutely scream off the line compared to what you are used to...

I don't see how a t.c would affect idle speed, it will help you launch better yes, by putting the engine closer to its new power band, but wouldn't affect idle in any way.
And like mentioned above don't bother with a 300 rpm + stock t.c.

What is STR?

I'm not really looking for something that is going to give me the best track times. I just want something that will make the engine a little easier on the trans. Right now the car is idling too high for the stock converter.

Are the SLP converters any good?

I don't want to spend upwards of $700 on a converter right now.

I seriously suggest you talk to Andre from Edge Racing Converters. I just replaced my multi-disk Vigilante with one of their Street Edge converters for $490.00 It walks all over the Vigilante...no contest.

The guy will NOT steer you wrong.

Wouldn't he need to drill the idle air holes in the throttle body out alittle to let more air through for the car to idle right at a lower rpm?

Your idle is not to far off, your setup is close to mine. I have 3:73 gears and a 3200 vig converter. My idle is around 900-950rpms in gear. If you want your idle lowered you'll have to get your PCM reprogrammed for it. Only thing is having a high stall T/C you've got to have the proper setup to get the power to the ground. Control arms, hardpan rod, and good sticky tires lke MT ET streets.
