Squeeky brakes
Squeeky brakes
My passenger side rear brake will not stop squeeking. I changed the brakes and the rotor to get it to stop. I lost the two lock washers that hold the rotor in place though, could that have anything to do with it. Sometimes it squeeks and sometimes it doesn't but it sounds like something is warped because it more like a squeek, squeek and the car kinda jerks back and forth when it stops. Anybody have any idea's? This is starting to drive me crazy.
Thanks

This is new info to me.....I have the EXACT same problem, I changed out the rotor and pads and it went away for proximately 1,000 miles, then squeak squeak squeak, its so annoying. So what are these lock washers I'm hearing about, I don't have any on either side, but only my passenger side does it. Where do I get them from? I was under the impression that my passenger side axel is bent slightly causing the pads to rub the rotor. I still think that this may be the problem, but lock washers sound easier...
I am starting to think everything is bent too. I just did replace my passenger side axle because it was bent, i just figured it bent everything else with it. I will try the lock washers and if that doesn't work I think i might be looking into a new passenger side brake setup.
My back brakes do this too. "squeek squeek squeek" ALL THE TIME. I replaced the rear with a Strange 12 bolt, but the brakes still squeek. I've changed the pads, tried the blue goo, and switched to powerslot rotors.
When I changed to the new rotors I saw the wear pattern started at the edge and took two months to wear completely to the center of the rotor. I think the caliper is stretched and distorted. I have a new caliper for the driver's side. I'll put it on soon and if it stops the squeek then I'l replace the pass side caliper too.
The "lockwashers" are not necessary. They just hold the rotor on the hub because the wheel's not bolted on yet while the car's being assembled.

The lock washers will not help you as pointed out previously. Does the sqeek happen when you make a turn or all the time? You might need a shim behind the caliper mounting plate. This will recenter the caliper on the rotor. This happened to me when I put new rotors on my rear. My sqeek only happened in turns.
The GM manual descirbes the shims and the measurements you need to take to determine if they are required.

I think GM made some sort of shims or spacers to fix this problem, check to see if the actual caliper itself is close to the rotor, I think this may be what is causing my problem. Haven't looked into the solution yet though.
I got the same problem, It started not to long after I installed new heavy duty brake pads. My driver side only squeels, people told me that my rotors might be warped so I got them machined today I hape that helps.
GM does have a shim. There are two in the pack. You need to remove the axle to install it. They solved my problem. I got the squeel when making right turns from the left rear wheel after installing new pads and rotors.
It will take about 2 hours. I'll look up the part number for the shim and reply later to day. The part number in the service manual was replaced a a different part number. I would recommend replacing the C clips while you have them out. It is actually a pretty easy job to do.
