Squeaky Brakes

My brakes are squeaking, they started to do this yesterday. When i turn my wheel to the right sharply my right wheel seems to squeel. Same thing when I brake hard, the right wheel seems to squeek. Does this mean i need new brakes? And when i went to get my tires changed they said i needed new rotors. Do they just want business or are they serious. I didn't seem to notice them be a problem?

just pull a tire off and check the pads if there low you will know and just change them, how many miles on your car? did you ever change the rotors? does your foot vibrate when you apply the brakes?

If the pads are slotted, make sure dust hasn't built up to the point that part of the slot is level with the pad. If it is, take a dremel and grind the dust out and widen the slots a little, bevelling the top edges of the slot a bit. A good 'ol file does the bevelling nicely. Just a few light passes. Don't get carried away and don't go all the way through the pad material. Also, make sure you have a nice coat of caliper grease on the pad where it mates with the piston and caliper.

If your rotor surface is level with the rusty part in the middle of the rotor and you don't have any pulsating when you slam the brakes when they are hot, your rotors don't need turned.

All this assuming your pads aren't just worn and the warning clip isn't scraping. Doh!
