Unhappy sputters and backfires

I recently purchased a 94 camaro Z28. It was sitting for 3 years. I drained out all the old fuel and changed the fuel pump. Unfortunately a little animal decided to call the engine bay home and stuffed it full of yard clippings and leaves. So I thought I would wash it out. Now after doing a lot of research I found out this was extremely bad idea. The car ran fine when it got parked at my house 3 years ago while the past owner had to pay his debt to society. I would start it up every two weeks and move it around for him. We he returned for his "vacation" he took the keys and that was the last time the car ran...3 years ago. It now will almost start but never turns over or it will sputter a bit after i turn of the starter.... Occasionally it will backfire out the tail pipes loud as hell. I'm pretty sure I ruined the optispark unit but I wanted to ask some one who has more experience with these car. It has fuel pressure and spark, but it seems as if the timing is off with the backfiring and the way it sputters... Any help would be appreciated.

Re: sputters and backfires

yeah being a 94 especially, the hose down and the backfiring as you described sounds like the opti took the ****. Often times people point at the opti way too much, and its actually rarely the actual problem as most people like to have you think. In this case however, it definitely sounds like the optispark.

You could have water in the plug area or even got the coil wet. Let it sit and dry off then try again. When you get it running let it run for a while and it might clear up

I tried to start it again to day. Everything is completely dry. Same results.
