Sputtering/missing above 4,500?

Above about 4500 RPM, I'm getting a really bad miss or sputter. Very similar to the effect you get when you hit the rev limiter. Could this be the opti? Or an air leak past the MAF? I want to figure out what it is before I start throwing money at it. I'm not getting any codes, & it runs fine except at WOT above about 4.5K RPM.

Thanks!

90% of the time its the coil or the coil wire
8% of the time it's fuel starvation...

the other 2%...who knows

i'd put my $$ on the coil/coil wire

Its a Crane Fireball coil...only has about 20K on it. Are Crane's known to go bad? I doubt it is the wire...they are Magnecors & pretty new.

I'll check the coil...thanks!

Cool

Cris Frez mentioned about 4 years ago that guys were blowing up Crane coils left and right I think at the drags.I could be wrong,as the grey matter seems to evaporate over time.Hope this helps.

GMHTP

One of the GMHTP 12-second bolt-on guys put a new Crane coil on before he went to the event, and it went south on him. He was no longer a 12-second bolt-on guy.

Coils are cheap and unless you are pushing 500 hp it really doesn't matter which brand you use. I went through two stockers and then installed an MSD two years ago. No problems so far. I expect I will replace it anyway before the start of the new season just as a preventive measure.

Cool

Hello SSTUPID,I just got my latest issue of GMHTP and saw they blew up the opti, and was wondering if the ignition changes had anything to do with that.(Coil)?(12 second bolt on car). And did they change the wheels again,or am I looking at the wrong car?(Beer o'clock here).

I notice that everyone with an aftermarket coil fries their opti's? There is a definite explenation for this, the higher the voltage jump the more the opti is prone to carbon tracking & gasious cloud forming inside the opti which promotes rusting of all contacts & the eletrodes inside to get a buildup of carbon mixed with other particles in the cloud, which would cause bad optis. I'm using stock coil without a problem, my MSD killed all my optis, or atleast I'm comming to that conclusion now that this opti is lasting very well with stock coil, & so did the first 93 opti I had on my 93 with stock coil.

Luck

Any luck with a solution, yet? It looks like I have recently acquired the same problem. Just my luck. I have a stock coil.

Not yet, I haven't had time to mess with it. Let me know if you figure it out, & I'll do the same.

Lucky

I might have figured out how to solve the symptom, but I must have a timing issue. I went and got 5 gallons of Howell racing fuel and mixed it in with the gas that I just got before I started having the miss and the miss went away. Since the octane cured the symptoms I was having, it must be timing. What to do from here is my next question. I will keep you posted.
