sprung weight vs unsprung wieght vs rotational mass
When i was in high school and used to manage a bike repair shop we used the 1:10 ratio when discussing lighter bicycle wheels. They have most of the mass around the circumfrance (sp?) though. I'll trust Herb even though i haven't gotten around to picking up his books. He must be one smart **** for so many people to revere him as a guru.

Eeeesh... wish I didn't bring this thread back... while were at it discussing weight reduction... what items would you guys if you had "infinite" funding for, replace with billet aluminium peices to save some weight. I have access to a CNC machine now!

Trying to reduce unsprung weight on a F-body with lighter wheels is pointless, when the heavy live axle is a majority of the unspung rear weight. You still get the benefits of lower inertia, however.

seeing how the 98 TA wheels are about 6-8 lbs lighter than salad shooters a peice-
its an easy appearance upgrade and weight reduction.
Its also very cheap after you sell your old salad shooters. I bought my car used with 48# Chrome wheels
. First thing i did was lose them and get fresh rubber on the salads. yeah- about 20# a wheel = massive differance. the 16 vs 17'' wheel was also a welcomed comfort

I disagree to an extent.

The rear end of our cars is the weak link, in terms of unsprung weight. 12-16 lbs reduction is good, but considering the rear unsprung weight is approx. 300lbs, it's only a 4-6% decrease.
You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. The f-body will never have decent ride quality or rear suspension response with a heavy live axle, regardless of what wheel's are used.
Now, go with the wheel change AND the Curry aluminum axle, and you'll begin to feel the difference!
