Spare tire rims as skinnys

Why or why not

Just thinking about it, with drag radials in the back should be able to drop a couple tenths.

No, those are only rated for around 55mph, and you would never pass tech anyways.

the tires are rated for 55, could they be replaced with better ones?

A. The tires are not rated nor are the rims for that speed by design is my understanding, the 55mph is no joke.

B. You'll look like Slappy the Street Racer doing it

C. Save up and get DragLites if your thinking of skinny's. I have seen people loosen their front Sway Bar nuts to the top of the bolts than by running your spare tires which are extremely heavy actually. If you do loosen your sway bars ONLY do it at the track and retighten them afterwards. It simply allows your car to raise a little more in the front, transfering weight allowing a little more traction and maybe a half of a 10th maybe a tiny more in your 60' time. I have heard of some doing this while saving up $$$ for drag springs and shocks.

I looked into this idea a few months ago. The stock tire is the biggest problem, as mentioned it's only rated for 55mph and I would seriously not go beyond that with it even if it's only for 5-10 seconds, it cant be safe. If you have the newer 16" spare like I do good luck finding a different tire for it, there are non in that size. You could do this pretty cheap with the older 15" spare, you can use the old VW tires I think they are size 165/15. They are really cheap (about $30 each) and rated up to 118mph. A lot of people use that tire with real skinnies like the 15 X 3 1/2 Welds etc. I gave up on that idea and am finally just getting some real weld skinies along with the VW tires to save some bucks. You could probably get away with the VW tires on a 15" spare but I just decided to avoid the hassle I would probably receive from tech guys at most tracks I go to. (along with all the **** I would hear from some freinds )

i thought the 55mph speed rating was only for the back axel because of the posi?

the manual says nothing about a speed limit if being used on the front of the car... iirc, i may be wrong

I'm sure tearing up the posi due to different size rear wheels spinning at high speeds has a lot to do with it but it also says in big letters right on the tire itself "DO NOT EXCEED 55mph" or something to that effect. I don't thinks it's exactly a "Z" rated tire or anything

Why would you want to? Its HEAVY, which kinda defeats the whole purpose. You won't catch me intentionally installing a donut on my car unless there is a blowout (I'll use Fix a flat if I can!) .

I thought about doing it, but decided against it. One, they're heavy. Normal tire and 16x8 wheel weighs about 45 pounds, a spare weighs about 38.

Guess not! It was just an idea passing through my head as I'm waiting for my new SS rim to come and have my donut on my car.

My stock 16" spare & tire weighs 27.5lbs. Thats pretty close to what a 15 x 3 1/2 weld wheel and tire weigh, about 25lbs. Just an FYI
