1st of all it was surging while driving in upper rpm's. Id put it in 6th gear and it would hardly even go it was surging so bad. It would die sometimes when i stopped at lights. Now it wont start at all. Well it starts....but then 2 seconds later it dies....just as if someone had turned the switch back off. Any suggestions?

 

Sounds like it, but test it first. Check for spark at the coil wire w/ a spark tester (I think you can borrow one at Autozone) while someone elese is cranking the engine. If there is a spark then your opti is going bad. If no spark or a spark follow by few no sparks then your coil is bad.
