Some Questions From A Newbie
Some Questions From A Newbie
Hi,
I recently purchased a low mileage 93 6spd with the following mods to replace my stolen porsche.
Hypertech chip
Callaway honker air box
MSD spark enhancer
Hotchkis strut brace
lingenfelter sways and trailing arms
slp springs and 17x9 rims
Doug Rippie revalved bilsteins
Here are my questions,
I read the hypertech doesnt do much. other than lowering the 1/4 time 1/10th of a second, when does it add boost? Is there a place to find dyno charts with and without the chip?
If i remove the chip, will MPG improve at all? is it worth going back to stock?
The rear end seems a bit stiffer than the front. is it that im used to an IRS and this is something to get used to with a solid axle, or are there any tricks to neutralize the handling other than playing with tire pressure. I had adjustable konis and got the settings just right a week before the car was stolen.
I plan on autocrossing the car with the original 16" rims at the next PCA event. what pressures have you found best? I was running 40psi in the front and 35 in the rear of my 944, and planned on dropping the rear to about 30 because the power caused more oversteer than i wanted. with the lighter rear end and extra power of the camaro should i lower the rear even more dramatically?
Thanks in advance
TR

As far as the hypertech, I don't know about the chip, but the programmer (i guess they do about the same thing) can actually hurt performance by increasing spark in the low rpms, and dropping it the higher rpms. I know my car felt more sluggish with their "power" tuning
. I'd say gas mileage could get better, just remove it and find out. As far as the autocross portion I'm not familiar enough with it to give any good advice.

i hear that a chip won't do much at all unless you have modified your engine , i would keep a chip if i already have it, anything helps i guess if you want to go faster, as for the rear end im sorry i don't know much, and by the way blake, i notice you have 342's, i just ordered 342's for my car, how does yours ride on the highway, do you think i could still be able to do long trips ok with them, and without suffering too much on fuel, i have 273's right now, sorry for cutting in in this thread like that, thanks.
The hypertech is "supposed" to chage the air fuel ratio and change the timing. My car seems to run the same with it in or out. I plan on getting a custom tune in the future. i have heard of hypertech tuning rasining the air fuel ratio way to high.
The 342 aren't really that bad on gas. At 70mph it cruises around 2500rpm, and at 60 mph around 2000. I've never had the 273's (3.42 came with the car when I bought it) so I can't tell you about the difference, but I doubt it's too bad, the extra takeoff more than makes up for it
.
.
so i guess i will take the lazy way out and leave the chip alone for the time being.
i will play with tire pressures and maybe pop in an adjustable torque arm if i cant get the suspension balanced.
if someone does have a dyno chart with and without the hypertech it would be appreciated.
thanks

Tom R., sorry to hear about your Porsche. I had a 944 that blew up this summer which led to me buying the Hawk. For the suspension/rear, the Porsche is a perfectly balanced car with an IRS and the F-body isn't. You have a large V-8 up front and not much weight in the rear. What you have is two different schools of thought, Porsches are designed from the frame up/handling mindset with the motor complimenting the chassis, while the F-body/muscle car mindset is build the car around the motor. What you end up with is a perfect handling Porsche with only 160HP and a monster V-8 with 300 that has some trouble in the turns. They both have the same potential to succeed when placed in the right hands. It will take some getting used to.
Oh yea, first lesson I learned..........DON'T SLAM THE DOORS!

Hawk,
I had a 944S2 which came from the factory with the 16v DOHC motor, great low end torque. 0-60 in 6.5 sec from a 4 cylinder.
The S2 came with the turbo's suspension and killer brembo brakes.
The reason I bought my particuar Z28 was the suspension mods. i read the brands of parts the PO used were top notch, and probably would have done the same mods myself if i was a few years younger and had the patience.
I guess im not gonna get the car any more balanced than it is without pulling things out and starting from scratch.

Tom, you could try lightening the front a little with fiberglass hood and fenders, or try pressure adjustable shocks in the rear.
I had an '88 Turbo and it was great. It was easy to tune but finding aftermarket parts were a pain. The only place I found that was really good was Huntley Racing. I think you'll enjoy the vast aray of possibilities with the F-bodies. If you need any advise let me know.

anderson from huntley went out on his own, and there was a lot of pissed people complaining about lousy turnaroud time from both places in the last six months or so.
i spoke to someone at doug rippie, and he sent me to bilstein. if i send them the rears they will revalve them for $110. before i do that i want to make sure its the shocks, not the personality of the car.
I toyed with the idea of dumping the chrome 17" rims for 16" rims thinking the additional rubber may absorb some more of the bumps at the expense of a little lateral grip.
but from what you posted it probably is the personality of the car.
