So let me get this right

I have been working on my car for a week now.
I can not get the pasanger side cat down.
On the exhaust manifold I have broken the stud near the starter.
But I cant get the one by the heat shield by the AC.
I have tried a Flared Crowfoot.
I get a good clear shot at it and it just slips off.
I used a deep socket with a impact joint and it just pop's off.
So I just want to get this straight.
Out of the thousands and thousands of people on this board there is no
body that has ever took off the pasanger side cat?
And who can rember how the did it and what tools they used?
I hate to sound like a D*** but I can't take it any more.
I have a bad cat and it needs to come off.
One week I have beed trying to get one nut off.
I think thats one day too much.
I am not taking it to a shop because every they break something.
And won't fix what they break.
Thats why I have a bad cat because I posted on this bord for a month
about how to take the engine out of my car.
And the response was you have to get it up 3-4 feet and it comes out the bottom.
So after a month I took it to a shop and the guy F***** up my car did a lot of damage to it and says that he did not.
One of the thing's he broke was the pasanger side cat.
He must have droped it on the ground and it sounds like popcorn.
Then it stoped.
So I need to get it out before I have to replace the engine.
This guy is the biggest losser he sould not be in business.

So can any body "please help me"?

Thanks,
Chris G.

Re: So let me get this right

The passenger side cat on my car was a pain to get off. I was able to get one of the three bolts off with a socket wrench. The other two would not budge and I had to cut them off with a cutoff wheel. I had to be very CAREFUL to avoid the fuel lines that run around that area. Still it might be easier just to purchase a cheap cat. such as Catco or Carsound and pay a shop 50.00 to chop it out and weld in the new one. JMHO though.

I was going to go that rought but they told me it would not be worth to.
Too much in labor to put the cat on.
How the heck did you get a cutoff wheel up in there.
I would cut the hold dam stud off and replace the manifold.
Looks like getting the exhaust manifold would be easy.
Then I would just bolt it up with 2 nuts.
I have my old LT1 so I have the manifolds.
But god help me if the bolt's snap off in the head.
I might try to find a shorter deep socket.
You think that might help?
The socket I am using now is 2 1/2 inches long.

Let me know.
Thanks,

Chris G.

TTT
I guess I will never get the cat put on.
And I won't be driving the car for a very long time.
Because what I am trying to do is impossible.

Re: So let me get this right

Probably a stupid question, but did you soak the studs/nuts in penetrating oil before trying to break them loose?

A couple other thoughts: is the deep socket a 6-point or 12 point? A 6'er will work much better. Make sure it's the right size, too (never know which are metric and which aren't).

Re: So let me get this right

Yes I have used penetrating oil.
I am using a 6pt socket too.
They are 15 metric I dobble checked to be sure.
I'm going to try to fine a shorter deep socket today.
I think that might do the trick.
Because the socket I am using now is 2 1/2 inches long.
I think if I get a shorter one it won't pop off when I try
to take it off.
If that don't work the I will have to fine a way to cut it off.
Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Chris G.

Re: So let me get this right

The shop I went to to have my subframes installed F'ed up my passenger side cat as well. They said that they could not be held responsible because for all they know it was an already pre-existing condition. I told then to F themselves and have discouraged all of my local neighbors from going there.

To fix the problem - I had another local mechanic (that specalized in custom exhausts) cut the damaged cat out with a plasma cutter. 4 minutes and it was out. He then welded up a new carsound cat in it's place. (even though the welds near the top of the pipe are a bit shoddy, it still works)

Costs
$100 for the cat
$50 labor

Just having some fun - he put the damaged cat into his 10 ton press and squashed the crap out of it.
