Is it okay for the smooth side of a belt to ride on a groove pulley or the opposite the groove side of the belt on a smooth pulley?

I Deleted my air conditioning and relocated it, and with my new belt routing it will ride on my Power steering pump groove belt to smooth pulley, and the idler I might be using would be smooth pulley to groove side of belt.

The Crank, alt, and tensioner will all be grooved/grooved with this setup tho

 

otherwise if that might be an issue, I have source a power steering pulley from a late 90's early 2000's gm 3.8 pulley that might work part number Dorman 300-130 specs - OD 5 25/32 Width 1 5/32 ID .75 6 Groove. can also get a AC Pulley from an LT1 that will be grooved part number Murray Pulley Part Number: 45971, but will have to make my own spacer and stuff.

 

Just measure the Power Steering Pulley from my motor, which is a smooth pulley, and they are identical in size. Its about 25$ new from the parts store.

The idler pulley from the AC can be had for 13$.

I think i Might be going this route, any input?

Also, Will the alternator Work Spinning in either direction, and also will the power steering pump work spinning in either direction, just checking before i buy parts

 

P/s will not work spinning in the incorrect direction, try to find a car that uses a pump that will work, that runs a grooved pulley

 

Ya that pulley is a direct fit for our pulley tho, and I think in the position i have it in, it will spin the correct direction, that question is aimed at the alternator, will it still charge if its spinning the opposite direction?

And the real question was if it would wear the belt faster/weird if they arent groove/groove smooth/smooth?

 

The belt will not last if the smooth side is on the grooved side of the pulley.

 

Aight so after staring at it for hours and Measuring and lots of spacing and bolts and everything i had in me, i figured out a way to mount the alternator low, tensioner in stock position, power steering in stock position and the AC idler pulley up even with the power steering, that should net the groove/groove smooth/smooth equation i need. I will post pics once i get it all finished up and welded/mounted/painted.

its kind of the opposition of most of the Alternator relocation brackets, the ones where all you have left is the alternator, where it has a kinda backware C shaped bracket. Well I put my alternator lower and put a Regular C shape bracket to the left of the alternator, and Welded a Plate to that, that goes up higher and thats where my Idler pulley will be mounted. I made sure to space everthing correctly and there should be no issue with throwing belts.

its been a pita, but i was determined to get the alternator low and not spend any money on it lol

 

There the bracket i made, its 1/4 inch steel and is really sturdy.
