sludge....

Are there any good products out there that will break down sludge in and engine? I recently changed out the WP, opti, front seals and was shocked at how much tarish sludge I could see on the cam face and inside the timing cover.
I don't think the previous owner took very good care of it. Its sitting at 156,000 miles now and I'm afraid that the sludge is the only thing holding it together...lol.

Seafoam is good, you can also try running some Shell rotella oil in it, should clean it up. I've heard that the diesel oil has more detergent in it.

I'm just afraid of big chunks breaking loose and clogging things up. Just want to milk this motor for a year or two untill I'm ready for a build or a LSX swap.

Just be careful as you said as you go knocking stuff loose you'll prob clog up your oil p/u and bam - Time for a rebuild!!! I personally would leave it alone as with that many miles you will probably do more harm than good.

This is my opinion. Take it for what its worth.

Nothing goes in the oil filler cap but oil. These cleaners and additives will break the junk down but sometimes too rapidly which leads to possible clogging and other issues. Also the cleaners are pure hell on the rod, cam and crank bearings since the oil is thinned more than the bearings would like not to mention being subjected more to filth in the process of flushing things out. If you have bearings that are on the fringe of being shot, this might do them in when otherwise they might be able to hang on.

The best way to clean out a motor is the slower way using repeated oil changes. The new oil will slowly break down the junk in a more safe manner. Buy a bunch of oil and filters and change every 500 miles for about 3 or 4 times and you will clean the vital areas.

Thanks everybody. Gonna try the repeat oil changes first and how that goes.
Maybe ill seafoam the intake track just to clean out the runners and backside of the valves.

The seafoam is worth using in the intake tract and vore cleaning the valves. Just disconnect the opti hose from the elbow and dip it down in the seafoam and wait for the big *** smoke cloud to appear.

i would go with the diesel oil after about 5 changes, diesel oil does have more cleaners but does it in a slow manner, so no clogging.
