SLP or Borla - Performance?

I have a 97 SS with the 2OTL SLP exhaust on it now, Im adding jet hot headers, mufflex y pipe, hot cam, roller rockers, and upgrading my clutch. Would I see any performance increase if I went with a borla exhaust on the car?

Over stock, yes. Power because of flow. More flow is good.

I would only think youd see much of in increase if you ran the bolra with the wide open plate. Then it essentially becomes a cut out.

There are plenty of other 3 inch exhaust options... I thought the SLP 2OTL was a 3 inch system as well. If you like the exhasut you have now, you may want to consider just putting on a cut out for the extra power.

For what it's worth, 2OTL only lost 2 or 3 rwhp over a cutout with stock internals and stock manifolds. If you like the catback you have, it's one of the best flowing catbacks out there because of its straight-through design. Buying a Borla at this point would probably be more for looks and/or sound than performance, unless as otherwise stated you ran it like a cutout. I think you should keep your 2OTL and install a cutout. It's a $30 cutout or a $600 catback, up to you.

I agree w/ most of the other replies here, to an extent. I have Borla, and I love it. It looks good, is hardy, and you have the option of removable plates.

I went through a couple of exhausts before I bought this one. One being Flowmaster

If you have the extra to spend, by all means, go for Borla, b/c it is the BEST

If you are planning on some real mods in the future, you will continue to benefit and gain from it. Very good flow.

Good luck!

Cool

Keep your SLP. Spend the money elsewhere. Your future setup is not going to be significantly changed if you switch to a Borla.

You wouldn't gain a darn thing with the borla. You'd waste 700 dollars and have a car that sounded like crap with those mods.

I have a Borla and love it! The quad tips look the best on these cars IMO and the sound is great too. As for performance, well if you have a 3" system now why change it? That's alot of money that would see bigger gains spent elsewhere.

No kidding!

You already have one of the best sounding/flowing cat-back systems available for your car, so you won't gain anything running a wide-open Borla and very little if any at all with an SLP LM.

Plus both of those systems sound really raspy/high-pitched with headers/no cats.

Mike

BTW, your 2OTL is a 3" aftermarket cat-back that SLP used for most of the LT1 SS's in case you didn't know that(it's not some OEM factory system)...

I have the Jethot LT's, 3"Y, No-CATS, open Borla, as for performance, the car runs super, I'm running 13.2 in the 1/4 with the above and a Moroso CAI no engine mods. Whether it will give you more performance over your SLP, it would depend on whether it yours was 3" and as free flowing as Borla (I'm not sure). But I will say my only gripe is that the Borla with longtubes, 3" ypipe, no cats is a little raspier VS when it was stock headers/cats with the Borla. It lost the deep tone that Borla is known for on LT1's. Someone on this site suggested I install a set of DYNATECH 3" Silencer Cones in the header collectors, he has the same setup as mine. I should have them in from Summit today hopefully, they are supposed to give me back the deep tone I had. As for it sounding like crap like someone here said, it doesn't sound like crap at all, I get a ton of compliments on mine and I'm my own worst critic, so that's just hotair, it all boils down to what you like in performance, sound and looks.

Question

Brettinator,

Just out of curiosity, have you tried running with the full block off plate? If so, do you get that nice deep tone back, or is it still a bit raspy. I want to get LT's, but would also like to keep the "nice" tone. Anyone?

So it does or doesn't sound like crap?

oh wait, nevermind i already know it does. JK man, everyones opinion is different, thus......"JMHO". Yes better than a ricer, but i wouldn't want to be seen driving it.

Yes the blockoff plate gets a nice lower tone back..........but chances are that if your used to the open plate you'll be on this site a week later asking 'how to make my exhaust louder'? I was amazed at the decible difference between open and closed the first time i heard it. Just go with another catback.

Nah,

I doubt i'd want anything louder. I actually like a nice refined tone , rather than the NASCAR (open plate) sound. With stock manifolds and cat, I run the smallest plate. Quite nice IMO. When the LT's go on I want to still sound "refined" without the rasp-factor. I can always open it up at the track for more hp, but would prefer to sound mellow on the street and actually be able to hold a conversation in the car

Well then the LT's increase in volume will hopefully cancel the difference in plates and it'll work out perfectly for you

The original context of this thread was for a car with a cam which can also make a HUGE difference as will whether or not you have a cat(s). A setup like yours (assuming stock motor closed plate) is not at all what i was talking about when i said it'll sound like crap!

It seems to me that the overwhelming majority on here thinks cutouts and open borlas are a holy gift from God just to make their cars loud. hahah
