Slipping tranny or bad sensors?

So this is the issue...

My friend just got a 396 fully forged 95 z28 with a 700r4 (the car is a M6 converted to A4).

On the highway it is either a beast or a slug. It will either pull HARD at low throttle and 2 seconds later it will take 1/3 throttle to keep it moving.

The SES light also comes on when it starts to accelerate harder most of the time. We havent pulled the codes, but could this be tranny related or is it engine related. Does the tranny throw any codes?

The converter is loose as hell BTW. Its a vig 3600 as far as I know.

Oh yea, it also does not have the speedometer cable connected because of some splicing issues.

Would that be a reason for the problems? Maybe the converter isnt locking up?

Thanks

Re: Slipping tranny or bad sensors?

is it a 700r4 or a 4l60e?

if a 700r4, does it have the T/V cable hooked up?

700r4 and im not sure what the T/V connector is, but i dont think its connected.

The speedo doesnt work and the converter isnt locking up.

Oh my god, if you dont have the TV cable hooked up or adjusted properly, STOP driving that car NOW or you WILL burn it up in no time at all! To get a rough adjust it the lock should be opened then floor the accelerator and then snap the cable lock back down. See where the shift points are, then adjust the cable tighter for later shifts and vice versa. As far as l/u is concerned, are you sure the l/u solenoid was connected inside, and that its good? Also make sure you have the 4prong connector plugged into the tranny. The speedo is irrelevant if its just the mechanical style cable.
