Should the poly locks rub against the RR arm?
Im installing GMPP 1.6 roller rockers on my new build, but the poly locks seem to rub against the the top of the rocker arms. Is this normal or am I doing something wrong? I mean its rubbing to the point where a few are gouging the aluminum. This has me concerned. The cam is a cc 224/236 blower grind. The heads are stock with cc987 springs, stock rocker studs. They seemed pretty tight with my hot cam set up, but didnt gouge the rocker arm. Just rested really close to it. I should mention it is doing this when the arm is pushing the valve down.
Also, how long does it take a lifter to pump up? I rotated the engine with the starter for about 20-30 seconds. I did this 2-3 times. Checked my lash on the valves and they were loose. Some to the point where you could physically lift the rocker arm off the valve stem. I followed the valve adjusting method in the haynes manual and on shoebox's site, but they dont seem to retain the adjustment. What am I doing wrong?
TIA,
Eric Bazan
P.S. Moderator could you please move this to the LT1 section. I accidentally posted in the LS1 section. Unless someone here can help me.

Re: Should the poly locks rub against the RR arm?
Something is wrong with your setup. The rockers should not be touching the locks. Did the locks come with the rockers or did you buy them separately? If they are both the same brand they really should match up right. If they don't then call the manufacturer and tell them. You can also buy a different brand of lock with a taller shank that would help you clear. As for the pump up, typically just cranking the engine over with the starter won't generate enough volume and pressure to get all the air out of the lifters. If you set the valves right just bolt on the valve covers and run the engine for about 30 seconds and it will get the air out. Keep in mind most roller rockers with be slightly noisier than stamped rockers.

Yeah the lock should not contact the rocker body at the sides at all, are they non self aligned or self aligned, are you using guideplates?
I had this happen to me before, but it was because I lost a poly lock and just bought a generic replacement from a freind, it was bigger around and rubbed, I replaced it with a propper one as soon as I could.

The polylocks I am using came with the cam kit when I purchased it. They have always been kinda close to the top of the rocker arm, but have never rubbed like this. Also, these are self aligning rocker arms.
Do you all have any recommendations on a good set of poly locks?

I bought my Crane golds used and you could see where they rubbed the top of the rocker. I had the valve cover off today and it looks as if on of them has rubbed recently
I might need to look in to changing mine out!

Its possible you have the inside part of the rocker upside-down. There is a machined shoulder on one side, and no shoulder on the other, and the rockers will go on either way.

I replaced mine with the ARP 12 point head polylocks, but I wish they were a hex head for simplicity. They are quite narrow as well, comparatively.

Re: Should the poly locks rub against the RR arm?
Okay, I didnt get too specific about my set up. But, does this sound correct? My heads have been milled @.013-.015 mils. The block zero decked and Im using a fel pro 1074 head gasket and cc xe 224/236 grind cam. Im still have my stock pushrods in the engine. Now, would you say I need a shorter pushrod with these changes in valve train geometry? My uncle is saying I need a .+100 longer pushrod. I believe this is not correct. He and another guy said they checked the pushrod length with a plasitc pushrod checker and that I need a longer pushrod.
If my stock pushrod is the only that is unchanged and everything else has gotten "shorter" I believe I need shorter pushrod. I think the stock pushrod is pushing the rocker too high causing the poly lock to rub and gouge the rocker arm. Im at work right now and was not able to watch them check the height, so Im having a hard time believing them.
What do you guys think?
Thanks,
Eric
