For the record, thats not what I'm saying.

What is a contact that is surrounded by dielectric grease going to ground out on?

Edit: Besides the continuation of the circuit which would be the least resistance...

grease

I used dielectric grease on the load cell conections going up the boom on the crane's I repair. When you have 300' of boom on assembly of the crane and once the construction is started, there is NO place to boom down you better have something on the conections to prevent corrosion and oxidation or the crane gets shut down.
The signal coming from the load cell is milivolts,so the grease has no effect on the conection(10 in 300').What it does do is keep the weather and dirt out so the conection will keep a conection.
I use it on plug wires, opti, injector's and computer conections with no ill efects.

You can put it anywhere on/in the boot for the plugs.Another thing it keeps the boot from sticking to the plug and making it hard to remove.
The stuff does not alter any conections. It stops corosion and oxidation that's all.Ask anybody in the computer business.

My take is that it was used on the spark plug boots as a release agent and probably to help seal out moisture. The silicone properties make the boot easy to get off (so you don't tear up the wires). They did not want something that easily conducted voltage (given the high voltage of the spark), so dielectic grease was the choice.

Just a little browsing on the internet finds that dielectric grease may not be the best thing to use directly on "low contact" connections, but suitable for "high contact" ones.

I also read people arguing the same things being presented here.

I'M not in the computer business either but all these new cranes have some sort of computer in them of verying degrees. Some won't let an operator pull the wrong handle at the wrong time and make a mistake. All the computer reps that I have delt with demand dielectric grease on all connections on their systems on these crane's.I do know that it is non conductive and will help a conection stay conected.

I think I replied to your post earlier today...
I would put it on both opti end and plug end of the plug wire boots.. inside the boot, not on the metal clips tho...

Yes,rain, sleet, snow and heat. Not your computer in the bedroom. The one on our 2,000Ton is 4'Hx14"Dx22'W and has plenty, plenty wiring and conections. It oversee's everything on that machine.
The dielectric grease does not enhance conection's it just keeps the elemants out so it can stay connected.I do work on these sometimes, but any major problem that can't be fixed on the phone the manufacturer will send a rep to the crane to assist. One of the first things they will ask is do you have dielectric grease.

EDIT:It doesn't matter if it gets everywhere, that is why it is being used.
