Should i do a 383 stroker or not?
Should i do a 383 stroker or not?
Well my supposedly "new" engine that was in my Z28 when i bought it is making a ticking sound. I though it was in thevalve train so i put all new hardend pushrods, guidplates and Crane gold Rocker arms in. It still ticks really loud when warmed up. My mechanic says i am probably going to have to go into the engine.
This car is my daily driver. I want to keep good street manners. I like the idea of the 383 but how much extra will it give me? could i get 400 HP out of with a good cam and bolt ons? I don't really want to do nitrous or a blower. At most i might do forged pistons in case i ever decide to run a 100 shot on it. Probably try for around a 11:1 CR. Aproximately how much is this going to cost and is it worth. I am of course working on a tight budget.
Also recomend a good cam for this combo. I already have the valvetrain for it and will probably get some better valvesprings.
Also would i be better off to get the heads ported and polished than get a stroker. Will i get more power out of it ?
I will probably have to something new in the bottom end though since it sounds like where the noise is coming from.
thanks
Shawn

from what I have seen a few folks do the 355 rebuild, heads/cam and save cost vs a stroker and push 350 to 375 rwhp (key word heads/cam). When I eventually get to the point of needing a motor I'm stroking mine if I have the $$ set aside. It's not cheap stroking these motors from a parts/labor standpoint, rough number about $6-8k with all quality parts from the block through using something like AFR heads.
