I had a shop assemble the short block, then did the rest of the work myself. I used Mavrigian's book, the factory manuals, and a Haynes manual. I needed all 3. Mavrigian's book, especially, is incomplete, leaves out a lot of details, and actually takes the carb approach. Shoebox's site was critical in the final assembly.
I took my time, had lots of do-overs, but in the end I was pleased with the results. However, I have an excellent supply of tools and lots of experience in general wrenching.
If you can afford it, I would pay a QUALITY shop to do the work. It will be much quicker, and you shouldn't have near the worries of a DIY job.
If you are not completely comfortable doing it, for gosh sakes let a pro do it.

I got my book today. I'm going to spend a couple days reading over it. Also I have a engine builder that is going to help with the assembly.

Last night we measured for the correct pushrod length. We colored the valve tip with marker and kept increasing the length of the pushrod tool until the line was centered on the valve. We ended up with .215 longer then stock. But no one makes a 7.415 pushrod. Should I go with a little smaller or little bigger pushrod.
The book does not go into specfics about installed the rockers
I now have the engine on the k-member with the headers and tranny on. All I need is the pushords so I can prime the engine and put on the intake.
It won't be long now.
