Shorties or LTs Im so confused...

I hear all kinds of stories and i was just curiouse.. can Shorties ...on a consistent bases make the same power that the Longtubes are putting down ?... if they cant...is installing the long tubes worth the extra hp gain?
Ive read many threads on this and ive heard both sides argue on almost every thread i read.. so someone who can help me with this question id be glad.

you could go with MAC mid lengths and a cutout, what kind of power are you planning on making and what kind of mods.

I wasnt expecting much...for now till i get heads anc cam .. iwas just gonna go with the boltons (except electric water pump) and a madz28 tune. then then save up alot of money and ahve my heads done by loyd eliot and a cam...i was hoping to make somewhere around 300-400 hp/tq . an dthen suspension mods would follow in between boltons and the heads. In the future the heads and cam will becoming i know with boltons people are getting in the 300 area ... i provbaly wont do heads till a year or so and maybe then some new company will be out so i dont have anything set in stone yet... but im starting wat sounds to me like an exhaust leak so i want to swap my exhaust as soon as possible

It's not that big of deal over the miniscule horsepower gain difference. What are you looking at, maybe 10 or 15 hp to the flywheel? I have shorties but want LT's for the sound not the hp. As for power, well that's like a fat chic obsessing over a Coke or Diet Coke...kinda redundant don't ya think? Just trying to help, not being an ***.

Re: Shorties or LTs Im so confused...

dont get shorties for the simple fact that they are HELL to swap plugs. I can change my plugs in 45 mins. I would HIGHLY recomend MACs unless you are planning on true duals or over 400 rwhp (470 crank HP).

DO NOT GET SHORTIES!!!

Let me repeat.... DO NOT GET SHORTIES.

I come from experience. I have owned all 3, and MACs are the only alternative to LTs.

The other fella is right, it's a pain in the *** to change the plugs. Oh yeah, and thanx, glad somebody likes my sense of humor.

Re: Shorties or LTs Im so confused...

I see virtually identical HP gains from midlength headers(MAC, AS&M, RKSport, SLP) and Long Tubes(Hooker, Jet-Hot, Pacesetter). For instance, I gained 35 rwhp/ 32 rwtq with MAC headers, and a Hooker Catback. This is right on par with what guys are gaining with LT's. It really comes down to preference. They are both good options.

Some of the reasons I went with '94-'95 MAC Mids:
Better ground clearance
Great Plug access(best I've seen from any header)
Similar power/torque to LT's
Can buy them for $560 shipped, Jet-Hot coated including the headers and Y-pipe.
No special fabbing of exhaust components.
Easier install (no jacking up of the engine)
I wanted 1 5/8" primaries for the superior low end tq.

You can't go wrong with LT's either though.

Re: Shorties or LTs Im so confused...

Not really relevant, but it cracks me up when people talk about how difficult it is to change the plugs and that one needs to consider this when doing headers, etc.

Just how many times do you expect you will be changing the plugs?

If a good set of plats last at least 50,000 miles, then you might be changing them twice maybe 3 times before you need to refurbish the engine.

Now if you are beating the hell out of it and using coppers, you might be changing them more often, but if that's your style of driving anyway, you probably have removed just about everything that prevents you from getting at the plugs. JMHO

Re: Shorties or LTs Im so confused...

Ive changed 3 sets of plugs in the last 600 miles because of a faulty fuel pump, header leaks, and bad o2s.

LT1s seem to LOVE to foul out plugs, at least mine does.

The price differnece, power, and plug access make it totally worth it for me.

Re: Shorties or LTs Im so confused...

If you have to change your plugs every 200 miles, then I suggest you have bigger problems than just basing your header type on plug access. No flame intended.

No i hear you, no offense taken, but when you start modding cars... reliability goes out the window.
