shop says water pump / timing cover is clanking when engine turns off, help!
Help!
I have my car (97 z28) in the shop now to get a waterpump and powersteering pump change (new used car, getting parts freshened up).
They said they noticed that once the turn the motor off, it makes a "clank" noise from behind the waterpump. It rattles lightly when it is being driven, but you hear it most when the engine gets turned off.
They used a stethoscope on it, and they said they hear the clank equally loud through the timing chain cover, and the waterpump itself. They dont know where the clank is coming from - hopefully the waterpump, but they can't be sure. They said there is a chance that replacing the waterpump will make it go away, but if not, the clank is coming from underneath the timing chain cover somewhere.
What can this be? Not a bad motor, I hope? sigh! Quick advice would be appreciated!

Well, no help so far, but I thought I'd follow up in case somebody in the future has this same problem and came across it in a search.
The clanking sound was coming from behind the timing cover, and it turns out the reluctor gear is sliding back and forth inside the timing chain cover. The shop is taking the cover off now to figure out why it's sliding, and will fix it.
Hope this is it! What I thought would be a $1500-2000 overhaul for the used car is now up at about $3000. Ouch.

One more update - the loose/sliding reluctor gear is due to the crank hub being loose and slipping off the crank end.
Turns out the hub was hammered on, loose, and the crank bolt was stripped so the crank end has to be re-tapped. damn. At least it wasn't something more major.
Hope this helps people in the future when searching.
